Beschreibung

Ding dong. The Wicked Witch has fallen.

Nimue ruled the Land of Oz for a hundred years until Rose Briar and her band of misfits forced her into exile. Now, without Hera’s magic and with all the Dream Realm searching for her, she must find a way to survive and reclaim her throne by any means necessary.

Back in the Emerald City, Rose Briar awaits being crowned the new queen of Urgu. However, the machinations of royal politics are circuitous and dangerous, with threats lurking around every turn.

Not everyone is happy about the coronation, either. Namely, Chelle, Rose’s girlfriend, who searches for a way to open the Obsidian Spindle so they can return to Earth before Rose’s body dies back in the real world and she is stuck in Urgu forever.

If you love mythology, fairy tales, magical fantasy adventures, political intrigue, high stakes action, and star-crossed romances, then you’ll love the second book in The Obsidian Spindle Saga.

"The Balloon-Hoax" is the title used in collections and anthologies of a newspaper article by American writer Edgar Allan Poe, first published in 1844 in The Sun newspaper in New York. Originally presented as a true story, it detailed European Monck Mason's trip across the Atlantic Ocean in only three days in a gas balloon. It was later revealed as a hoax and the story was retracted two days later.
The story now known as "The Balloon-Hoax" was first printed in The Sun newspaper in New York. The article provided a detailed and highly plausible account of a lighter-than-air balloon trip by European balloonist Monck Mason across the Atlantic Ocean taking 75 hours, along with a diagram and specifications of the craft.

Once upon a time there was a blacksmith named Jack Oldfield. He was regarded as particularly miserly and addicted to drink. On All Hallows' Eve, the Devil himself appeared to him in a tavern and wanted to claim his soul. But Jack negotiated for one final drink. Since the Devil had no money with him, he transformed himself into a coin to pay for the drink. Jack quickly pocketed this coin in his purse, which contained a small silver cross, so the Devil could not transform back. Thereupon the Devil promised to leave him in peace for several more years. When the Devil came ten years later to claim Jack's soul again, Jack arranged with the Devil to have one last apple as a final meal from the apple tree. The Devil climbed the tree and Jack thereupon carved a cross into the trunk as quickly as he could. The Devil could thus no longer climb down from the tree and was trapped. Therefore the Devil promised to leave Jack's soul in peace for all eternity. When Jack died of natural causes decades later, he was turned away from Heaven's gate. But when he knocked at the Devil's door, the Devil likewise sent him away because he had made him a promise. However, the Devil did give him a piece of hellfire, and so Jack has wandered ever since in the gloomy in-between world with the hellfire, which he placed in a turnip he had brought with him...

In this hilarious cozy mystery, small-town police chief Arly Hanks tries to stop a right-wing militia from turning Maggody into a battlefield.

The sign welcoming travelers to Maggody, Arkansas, reads "Pop. 755," and don't expect Hizzoner Jim Bob to repaint it just because there’s someone new in town. The mayor won't go out of his way for anyone, especially someone wicked—and a woman who would open a pawnshop in Maggody must be very wicked indeed. Kayleen Smeltner decided to open the shop after her husband was killed during a burglary. She came to Maggody expecting peace and quiet, but she'll find this quaint little patch of nowhere isn't as peaceful as it seems.

When a right-wing militia takes up residence in the pasture behind the pawnshop, police chief Arly Hanks knows it's only a matter of time before the bullets start to fly. The strange citizens of Maggody are on the verge of civil war, and it will only take one spark to set the town ablaze.

There's no politics like small-town politics, and there's no town on earth like Maggody. This madcap take on right-wing militias is one of Joan Hess's most topical—and outrageous—mysteries yet.
