Synopsis

Born of bloodshed, a prolific stain, fed by the sins of earliest man....The Simmons moved into 228 Briar Street. With two growing children needing a stable routine and a house to call home, Marc and Claire settled into the old red brick, unaware of the neighborhood's dirty little secret. In the dark and unfamiliar depths of the basement it lurks. It desires to manipulate the family into destructive chaos as it has countless times past and as far back as there were settlers in this plot of land, feed upon both flesh and the ecstasy of its dark influence. And not just in this house. It is old, mischievous, and inherently evil. It is...THE STAIN. Ruschelle Dillon's brand of humor has been incorporated in a wide variety of projects, including the popular and bizarre novelette "Bone-sai," and this work reflects upon her talent this time in a dark and disturbing way, a tale of ancient evil resurrected in modern-day urban setting that only Ms. Dillon can tell, enough to satisfy any avid horror fan and will haunt you long after taking it all in from beginning to end.

Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffman was born on the 24th January 1776, the youngest of three children, in Königsberg, then in Prussia but now part of the Kaliningrad Russian enclave.

His parents separated when he was two and for many years life was to be provincial and, despite his talents for the creative arts and the classics, much was passing him by.

At 20 Hoffman obtained employment as a clerk and to the art that now surrounded him. Two years later he was in Berlin attempting a career as a composer with an operetta called ‘Die Maske’. His gift for drawing caricatures and sharing them often got him into trouble that was easier to avoid.

The years of Napoleon ravaging Europe were bad for Hoffman; he moved often and took on works as varied as theatre management and music critic. In this his talents were now more evident. His works on Beethoven where highly regarded by the master himself.

His literary breakthrough came in 1809, with ‘Ritter Gluck’, about a man who believes he has met the composer 20 years after his death. However the various jobs and the wars continued and plagued any career advancement despite his constant travel for opportunities, often through dangerous territories.

In the wake of Napoleon’s defeat in 1814, Hoffmann returned to Berlin where his opera ‘Undine’ was performed by the Berlin Theatre. Life was now more settled and many of his most famous works were written at his time.

From 1819, Hoffmann was struggling with both legal disputes and ill health. Alcohol abuse and syphilis were physically weakening him and from 1822 paralysis set in. His last works were dictated to his wife or to a secretary as all around him society descended into an anti-liberal agenda, stifling dissent with threats of legal action and even treason. The ailing Hoffman was among them.

E T A Hoffmann died on the 25th June 1822 in Berlin of syphilis. He was 46.

The Black Cat by Edgar Allan Poe is a chilling psychological horror tale told through the confession of a condemned man on the eve of his execution. Insisting upon his sanity, the narrator recounts how a once gentle and compassionate life gradually unraveled under the grip of alcoholism, paranoia, and moral decay. What begins as a peaceful household shared with his devoted wife and beloved pets, most notably a black cat named Pluto, slowly descends into a haunting narrative of guilt, obsession, and self-destruction.
As the narrator’s temperament darkens, his actions become increasingly erratic, and his relationship with the mysterious black cat takes on a sinister tone. When a second cat appears under strange circumstances, the line between superstition and psychological torment begins to blur. Is the animal a supernatural omen, or a manifestation of a guilty conscience? Poe masterfully leaves the answer uncertain, allowing tension to build through atmosphere and inner turmoil rather than overt spectacle.
Exploring themes of addiction, conscience, and the fragility of the human mind, The Black Cat remains one of Poe’s most powerful studies of psychological collapse. This audiobook brings to life the mounting dread, unreliable narration, and Gothic intensity that have made the story a lasting classic of dark literature.
