Synopsis

This a story of a boy born in the 1930s when poverty was the ordinary way of life. The boy was the first-born child of a young couple living in the dock area of Poplar. Among the first children evacuated from London when war was declared, the child's education suffered once in a country school. The usual path for boys during the war was to leave school and work on a farm, but this boy had a burning desire to join the RAF. He worked hard at school and paid close attention to the progress of the war. Shortly after the war ended he passed necessary exams and set off for a new life in the RAF. This is that boy's story

The USA Today–bestselling author’s French Revolution trilogy reaches a stunning finale with “a glorious, wonderful book!” (Mary Balogh).   At sixteen, high-born Lady Emily had been found alone with Leon Devereux and was summarily forced to wed the wild, notoriously seductive rake. But it had been a marriage in name only, and soon the handsome rogue left to seek his fortune. Now, the scoundrel has returned, demanding to consummate their union, but Emily has no intention of honoring her “husband,” no matter how irresistible his caresses.   When he sought asylum from the horrors of the French Revolution in England, Leon Devereux’s unruly ways earned him the contempt of the haute ton. Yet his heart belonged only to Emily, whose reputation he was forced to protect by marrying her when she was barely more than a girl. But now, Emily has blossomed into a woman who makes Leon hunger for a love he’s never known—a love he’ll show her if only she’d let him.   “I would recommend this book very highly to anyone looking for a romance with a good mystery and intriguing sub-plots.” —All About Romance

Based on the life of author G. L. Gooding's mother, Velma Steele, The Road to Resilience continues the saga first introduced in Where Courage Began. There, the audience met five-year-old Velma, her young siblings, and her suddenly widowed mother Alice. Now, it's Christmas Day 1924, and young Velma is still breathless from the dramatic events of the previous night. She remembers with joy participating along with many of her community in rallying around an isolated family in a moment of great need.

As years pass, Velma continues working hard at school and putting in endless hours helping her widowed mother and older sister. Together they support the family during the economic hardships in rural America that foreshadowed the Great Depression of the 1930s. Uprooted yet again by this national tragedy, the family's indomitable spirit and endless spunk help sustain them. Along the way, Velma begins to envision a brighter future in spite of continuing hardship. Then, as a young woman, Velma meets handsome Jack Gooding and in the briefest of time, realizes she has found her one true love. Now equipped with hard earned life skills, she feels confident in facing the vagaries of life with Jack at her side. Together they begin pursuit of shared dreams amid a turbulent world. All too soon, however, her resilience and courage must endure the greatest challenge yet.

Inspired by the author' s irrepressible grandmother, A Woman of Independent Means is a bestselling novel about Bess Steed Garner, a determined woman at the beginning of the twentieth century. At a time when women had few choices, Bess inherits a legacy— not only of wealth but of determination and desire. Following the novel' s success, the story was adapted into an acclaimed one-woman show starring Barbara Rush, and this audio presentation is Rush's tour de force performance of that play. Told entirely through letters, the action follows Bess' life from 1899, when she is in the fourth grade, to her death in 1977. What evolves is a moving portrait of a memorable character.
