Synopsis

In "The Crimson Flash," Roy J. Snell weaves a compelling narrative that explores themes of adventure, morality, and the complexities of human nature. Set against a backdrop of early 20th-century America, the story follows the enigmatic figure of the Crimson Flash, a masked hero who navigates the fine line between justice and vigilantism. Snell's prose is marked by its vivid imagery and fast-paced dialogue, evoking the serials of his time while also reflecting the moral uncertainties present in society. The novel belongs to the genre of early crime fiction, embodying elements of pulp literature that interrogate the allure of heroism and the shadows it casts over the criminal world. Roy J. Snell, active predominantly in the 1920s and 1930s, was a prolific writer whose works often mirrored the cultural tensions of post-war America. Having gained experience as a newspaper journalist, Snell possessed an acute understanding of both public sentiment and the intricacies of crime. This background likely motivated him to craft narratives that spoke to the American psyche, eliciting excitement while addressing ethical dilemmas faced by individuals. His interest in adventure tales and complex characters often results in layered storytelling that invites reflection. For readers who enjoy tales steeped in action, moral ambiguity, and richly drawn characters, "The Crimson Flash" is a must-read. Snell's unique perspective and stylistic flair offer not only an engaging adventure but also a deeper commentary on the nature of heroism and societal justice. This work is an essential addition to the library of any enthusiast of early 20th-century literature and crime fiction.

Confederate general Thomas Jonathan Jackson had been a virtual unknown upon his arrival at the front line of First Bull Run, but by the spring of 1862, thanks to his actions at that battle, “Stonewall” was already becoming known across the battlefields. Ultimately, it would be the Valley Campaign of 1862 that made him a legend.
In the early months of 1862, Jackson was given command of an army numbering about 17,000 in the Shenandoah Valley. His task was daunting. The loss at Bull Run prompted a changing of the guard, with George B. McClellan, the “Young Napoleon”, put in charge of reorganizing and leading the Army of the Potomac. That spring, the Army of the Potomac conducted an ambitious amphibious invasion of Virginia’s Peninsula, circumventing the Confederate defenses to the north of Richmond by attacking Richmond from the southeast. General Johnston’s outnumbered army headed toward Richmond to confront McClellan, but the Union still had three armies totaling another 50,000 around the Shenandoah Valley, which represented a threat to Richmond from the north. It was these armies that Jackson would be tasked with stopping.
Jackson would go on to lead his undermanned army through what military strategists and historians consider the most incredible campaign of the Civil War. From late March to early June, Jackson kept all three Union armies bottled up and separated from each other in the Shenandoah Valley by marching up and down the Valley about 650 miles in 50 days, earning his army the nickname “foot cavalry.”
Although Jackson is revered today as an almost ideal commander, a lot of his subordinates bristled under his leadership, believing not only that he asked too much but that he was too strict.

As endearing as it is humorous, this debut middle grade novel by Jess Callans is a tender, queer coming of age story about the courage it takes to find your own voice and choosing to just be.

Puberty, AKA the ultimate biological predator, is driving a wedge between soon-to-be 13 year old Ollie Thompson and their lifelong friends. Too much of a girl for their neighborhood hockey team, but not girly enough for their boy-crazed BFF, Ollie doesn’t know where they fit. And their usual ability to camouflage? Woefully disrupted.

When a school project asks them to write an essay on what it means to be a woman (if anyone’s got an answer, that’d be great), and one of their new friends is the target of bullying, Ollie is caught between the safety of fleeing from their own differences or confronting the risks of fighting to take their own path forward.

"Debut author Callans’ confiding tone leans into Ollie’s flummoxed first-person ruminations with rhetorical questions that probe moments of deep vulnerability and hope. … Clear echoes of Judy Blume couple with themes of social adaptation that rely a bit heavily on analogies to the animal kingdom, but a range of readers should relate to Ollie’s sense of otherness. As Ollie puts it, 'Being yourself can hurt,' but awkward and self-aware stories like Ollie’s can help more tweens 'just be.'"—Booklist, starred review
