Sinopsis

“Echo of Lies” is a documentary novella by Edgar Roun that explores the mechanisms of hate propaganda through the lens of a personal tragedy and its historical parallels. The main character, Viktor, is an investigative journalist whose life has been destroyed by a smear campaign and accusations of extremism. From a successful professional, he has turned into a recluse, living in fear, unable to write or trust anyone. His life has not been ruined physically, but existentially—by stripping him of his voice and his reputation.Yet in the depths of apathy, insight is born. A casually heard propagandist slogan, “We are protecting families,” becomes the trigger. Viktor launches a far-reaching investigation, plunging into genocide archives, survivor testimonies, and the works of ideologues of hate. He discovers a terrifying pattern: the phrase “cancerous tumor,” used by contemporary Russian “cult expert” Dvorkin to brand religious minorities, echoes the word “cockroaches,” used in Rwanda for Tutsis before the 1994 genocide, and the “parasites” of Nazi propaganda.Viktor derives a formula of hatred: dehumanization (stripping a person of human status through metaphors of insects and disease), the construction of an existential threat (the enemy is supposedly coming to destroy your children and families), and the legitimization of violence through the concept that “a creed is a deed”—a philosophy that justifies persecution for beliefs. The book documents real stories: the testimony of a prisoner in a Russian pretrial detention center, poems written by an inmate who died under torture, and parallels between the Nazi-era Apologetics Center of Walter Künneth and today’s anti-cult movements. Viktor realizes that his personal tragedy is part of a global technology passed down through generations from one ideologue to another (Künneth — Aagaard — Dvorkin). The ending is not vengeance but an act of bearing witness. Viktor writes a book, Echo of Lies, turning his pain into analysis, his fear into evidence. He understands that as long as there is a voice answering hatred with facts, the echo of lies will not become absolute silence. This novella is both a warning about how language prepares society for violence and a manifesto about the witness’s duty before history.

The Combals are not unacquainted with death: they have never quite recovered from the loss of one of them in childhood. And now, on Valentine's Day, they are losing another.
Guddy races to see her sister, Jerry and Bjarne avoid the phone and its news, Jean finds himself on a beach, and Annie fends off her mother's persistent questions about what's happening. And Therese tries to forgive them all before it's too late.
As each is forced to face the news of Therese's impending death, their actions weave a nuanced portrait of a family, of the devastating reach of childhood grief.
What if thinking is all we have at the end of the day? What if how we react really is all we can control? This transcendent first novel from award-winning poet Sina Queyras tells the story of childhood by illustrating six adult minds grappling with it: noticing, reaching, loving and flailing.

The intriguing history of Dickens's London, showing how tourists have reimagined and reinvented the Dickensian metropolis for more than 150 years

Tourists have sought out the landmarks, streets, and alleys of Charles Dickens's London ever since the death of the world-renowned author. Late Victorians and Edwardians were obsessed with tracking down the locations—dubbed "Dickensland"—that famously featured in his novels. But his fans were faced with a city that was undergoing rapid redevelopment, where literary shrines were far from sacred. Over the following century, sites connected with Dickens were demolished, relocated, and reimagined.

Lee Jackson traces the fascinating history of Dickensian tourism, exploring both real Victorian London and a fictional city shaped by fandom, tourism, and heritage entrepreneurs. Beginning with the late nineteenth century, Jackson investigates key sites of literary pilgrimage and their relationship with Dickens and his work, revealing hidden, reinvented, and even faked locations. From vanishing coaching inns to submerged riverside stairs, hidden burial grounds to apocryphal shops, Dickensland charts the curious history of an imaginary world.

Pam Roswell Moore had her doubts when she interviewed to be companion of the much-loved author Corrie ten Boom. Corrie's bestselling book The Hiding Place, which recounted how she and her family had hidden Jews during World War II in Holland until their betrayal and arrest by the Nazis, had launched for Corrie a worldwide ministry of travel and speaking. Awed by the spiritual challenge this companionship posed, Pam wondered how she could keep up with the energetic 83-year-old.
But God knit a strong bond between the young Englishwoman and the remarkable Dutch evangelist. Then Corrie suffered a stroke. Hospitalization followed; physical therapy; then long, loving hours at home. Corrie regained a little mobility for a time--until the next strokes hit. She never regained her speech. But the ministry that had touched millions continued as Corrie communicated through her eyes, through elaborate guessing games with those around her, through silent intercession for people God brought to mind.
For those five silent years of imprisonment, Corrie's spiritual depth offered mute testimony to her ongoing trust in her heavenly Father. The details of these years will move all who loved Corrie ten Boom. They will encourage those involved with the elderly or handicapped--and those who are themselves bedridden--that God is at work mysteriously in and through even the most incapacitated. This book attests to the truth Corrie loved so dearly: that, in spite of everything else, Jesus is always Victor.

A 2023 Wall Street Journal Bestseller
Nothing about Lori Van Dusen’s childhood indicated she’d become one of the nation’s top independent financial advisors. She was born prematurely on the wrong side of the tracks and with a genetic blood disorder. Her parents divorced when she and her twin brother were less than a year old. But her big, boisterous, loving Italian family, led by her beloved grandfather, a first-generation American with only an eighth-grade education, taught her that the only limitations in life are those we impose on ourselves.
As a young person, Lori wanted to sing on Broadway, not manage money on Wall Street. But in 1986, this quiet, serious young woman walked into the rough-and-tumble, eat-what-you-kill world of Shearson Lehman Brothers and never looked back. She fought her way to the top by thinking outside the box and working her ass off despite the jeers, insults, and sideways glances. Her secret weapon? A need to prove herself so strong she could outwork anyone.
But Lori’s trajectory to the top was not a straight, upward line; it was a rollercoaster. She hit the pinnacle of success only to have it ripped away in a legal battle with one of the biggest banks in the world. She was raped by a PhD candidate at Harvard, swindled by a business partner, and battled two life-altering medical diagnoses. None of that, though, would compare to having the two people she loved most in the world taken way too soon.
Despite the fear and pain, Lori remained hopeful and resilient. In this memorable, poignant, and inspiring memoir, she shares her lowest lows and highest highs as well as hard-earned wisdom from her bumpy personal, professional, and spiritual journey. Life was never meant to be fair, she learned, but we must keep running with grace if we are to find purpose and joy in the face of adversity.

“This little book is a jewel of intelligence, finesse and culture, which takes a technical object without complaint and turns it over and over as Heidegger taught us to do with Van Gogh's shoes. What is striking is the ambition of a meditation on the maps of contemporary modernity, on the famous Greater Paris, on the subject, on the plural, without the evasiveness of the postmodern, of the absurd quotation. Luis de Miranda goes for a walk, he tells you that he goes for a walk, but he leads you with great mastery and knows where he wants to go. There is nothing gratuitous about this encounter of the kebab shop on the dissection table of the City of Neon. It is rather a new Cartesian meditation after Descartes and Husserl: where the stove and its heat have given way to the whirling sound of gas in a tube. I am, I create, therefore I hear. “Born from an unexpected encounter with a neon sign on the Quai du Louvre, this book was composed based on a seminar given by the author in the winter of 2012. An inspired journey through the night, deciphering the halos of the past and the reflections of the present to give voice to a certain magic of the future.
