Beschreibung

The rags to riches tale of a larger-than-life romance of over seven decades

Me & Issy is a love story about how a troubled and deprived child chanced to meet a man who worshipped her, brought her a fantasy life of four boys and extraordinary opulence — and banished her self-doubt. She in turn was awestruck and mystified by his acumen and daring during his founding of the Four Seasons Hotels.

Beginning with her childhood in North Toronto, in a very Jewish home surrounded by non-Jews, Rosalie enchants us with anecdotes about her family, Isadore Sharp’s family, and the growth of their own in the light of the expanding Four Seasons chain. How did she go to the Ontario College of Art & Design while simultaneously raising four rambunctious boys? How did Issy open hotel after hotel with only his collateral of confidence and charisma? Rosalie is a rapt follower of his astonishing success and the first fan of his legendary town hall talks to 40,000 employees.

And with success came tragedy. The devastating death of their son Chris shook them, but they coped. Here, all of Rosalie’s life is opened up for viewing, the good and the bad, the success and the failures, but especially her inspired romance with Issy. In the words of their second eldest son, Greg, “Their mutual love and respect growing stronger over the past 69 years is as extraordinary as it is beautiful.”

As a progressive parish minister, Molly Baskette has been a companion during the most vulnerable and unsettled periods of many people's lives. She has also had a front row seat to remarkable human transformation, as many of the ruptures her people lived through turned out to be the way that God got in. But when she was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer at age thirty-nine, with two small children, her theology of and relationship to God was tested more profoundly than ever.

Instead of becoming despondent, though, she engaged with her faith more deeply—seizing the opportunity to test the seaworthiness of the faith she had been practicing and preaching. In How to Begin When Your World Is Ending, Baskette shares the questions that confronted her along the way like: Is it true that prayer changes things? Does God care whether we live or die—and is there a damn thing God can do about it anyway? How can vulnerability, counterintuitively, be a strength? And the million-dollar question: is there life after death, and just what might it be like?

Weaving together her own story and the stories of those she encountered in her life of faith, Baskette mines joy from all the hardest parts of being human. In doing so she reminds us that whatever you are going through, someone has been there before you, and found meaning in the madness.

A Michigan couple’s affair leads to two grisly murders by heroin injection in this true crime account from the acclaimed author of Lobster Boy. When Carol Giles’s friend Nancy Billiter was found dead—she had been bound, sexually violated, and injected with a lethal dose of battery acid and heroin—detectives in Michigan traced Billiter’s death back to Giles and her boyfriend, Tim Collier. Police also learned that the diabolical duo shared another secret: They had murdered Giles’s husband, Jessie.   Jessie, who had died months before Billiter, was disinterred, and an autopsy proved he’d been given a lethal shot of heroin instead of his prescribed insulin. Homebound and diabetic, Jessie was a heroin dealer. Police determined that Giles—who was fed up with taking care of her husband and children—along with her lover, Collier, had stolen the fatal dose from Jessie’s own drug supply. The cops surmised that Billiter’s death might have been due to her knowledge of the couple’s plot. In their dramatic trial, Giles and Collier turned against each other, but both were eventually convicted of murder.

Winner of the Black Academy of Arts and Letters’ First Prize for Literature, The Destruction of Black Civilization is a landmark audiobook that reshapes how we understand African history—and ourselves.
Written by historian Chancellor Williams after sixteen years of meticulous research and travel, this powerful narrative offers a bold, uncompromising account of the rise and fall of Black civilizations across Africa. Far from the passive figures often portrayed in mainstream histories, Williams places African people at the center of their own story—builders of empires, creators of culture, and stewards of knowledge.
This audiobook is a direct challenge to the long-standing myth: that Black people have no proud history. Williams confronts this lie head-on, asking: If Africa was the cradle of civilization, how did its people come to be seen as a race with no meaningful past? His answer breaks from traditional narratives, examining how natural forces, foreign invasions, cultural theft, and centuries of imperialism contributed to the systematic dismantling of Black societies.
More than just history, this is a call to mental liberation. Williams shifts the focus from outsiders' influence in Africa to the achievements and struggles of Africans themselves—offering a true account of Black history, by and for Black people. His insights continue to inspire educators, students, and listeners seeking to reclaim historical truth and cultural pride.
Perfect for listeners passionate about history, social justice, and the ongoing fight for identity and empowerment, The Destruction of Black Civilization is not just an audiobook—it’s an awakening.
