Summary

'She made some very poor decisions. You tried to warn her. You love her yet, and that's a credit to you, but you need to think about what's best for Scotland...'
It's 1567. James Melville is an intelligent, charismatic and skilled diplomat – and also one of the most loyal servants of Mary Stuart, the troubled Queen of Scots. It's a time of political turmoil, and the shocking crimes he has witnessed have shaken him.
Now he needs to decide who's guilty, who's innocent, and who is too dangerous to accuse. Change is coming, but at what price?
Mary is an explosive political thriller, and part of Rona Munro's breathtaking theatrical exploration of Scottish history. It is the sixth instalment of The James Plays Cycle which began with James I, II and III, performed by National Theatre of Scotland, including a run at the National Theatre in London, and which won the Evening Standard and Writers' Guild of Great Britain Awards in 2014, and James IV, co-produced by Raw Material and Capital Theatres in association with National Theatre of Scotland, in 2022.
Mary received its world premiere at Hampstead Theatre, London, also in 2022, directed by Roxana Silbert.
Available since: 11/03/2022.
Print length: 80 pages.

"The Raven" is a narrative poem by American writer Edgar Allan Poe. First published in January 1845, the poem is often noted for its musicality, stylized language, and supernatural atmosphere. It tells of a distraught lover who is paid a mysterious visit by a talking raven. The lover, often identified as a student is lamenting the loss of his love, Lenore. Sitting on a bust of Pallas, the raven seems to further antagonize the protagonist with its constant repetition of the word "Nevermore". The poem makes use of folk, mythological, religious, and classical references.

Disappointment, hope, struggle, love, failure and resilience are every day themes that occupy our thoughts and constitute our inner monologue. In this book, the writer takes you on a journey of self-reflection. It invites each of us to pause and reflect on the beauty, simplicity and complexity of life. To reconnect with ourselves and nature. And to rediscover ties and pure feelings with our families, friends, and the world around us... "The water gliding forming ripples on the lake. Above the cloud, blue skies, pure air... You are you... time to get happy, smile and laugh again. "... And " silence, alone with my thoughts again, inviting and familiar, like communing with an old friend... "

'After thousands of years, I have a mouth… So if you don't mind, Mum, Dad, I'm going to speak. I'm going to shout. When I become a human I'm going to use some words. Can you still hear me? Is my microphone on?'
Young people have inherited a burning world. In Jordan Tannahill's urgent and lyrical play, they reckon with the generations who have come before them, questioning the choices that have been made, and the ones that they will yet be forced to make.
In Is My Microphone On? an ensemble of young performers hold the audience to account, and invite them to experience the world together anew.
The play was commissioned by the Theater der Welt festival in Germany, premiered in English by Canadian Stage, Toronto, in 2021, and performed by youth theatres across the UK as part of the 2023 National Theatre Connections Festival. It offers opportunities for a large, flexible cast of any size or mix of genders, and can incorporate chorus work, movement and music.
