Synopsis

This fascinating memoir, ‘Life in Eternity’, by former Chief Constable Robin Oake, is deeply engaging and reveals a strong and intensely moving anticipation of life to come after death. It is written from Robin’s broad understanding of life, stemming from a terrible bereavement that forced the author to review his previously held view of life. ‘Life in Eternity’ is an account of positive thinking in practice to encourage and - hopefully - overcome even the worst kind of grief. Following the death on duty of his police detective son, Stephen, this book shows and encourages remarkable resilience and practical positivity and is, therefore, a useful and buoyant aid to anyone grieving. It is also, at a different level, an entertaining account of police life told by an extremely experienced former policeman.

Through raw, often darkly humorous reflections, the story traces a young woman's life in the spotlight—navigating fame, eating disorders, trauma, and grief—while gradually reclaiming her voice and autonomy after years of control and emotional manipulation. It is a candid look at how breaking free from familial expectations can be both devastating and liberating.

A bracingly original, revelatory debut that explores cooking and the kitchen as sources of pleasure, constraint, and revolution, by a rising star in food writing

This joyful, revelatory work of memory and meditation both complicates and electrifies life in the kitchen.

Why do we cook? Is it just to feed ourselves and others? Or is there something more revolutionary going on?

In Small Fires, Rebecca May Johnson reinvents cooking—that simple act of rolling up our sleeves, wielding a knife, spattering red hot sauce on our books—as a way of experiencing ourselves and the world. Cooking is thinking: about the liberating constraint of tying apron strings; the transformative dynamics of shared meals; the meaning of appetite and bodily pleasure; the wild subversiveness of the recipe, beyond words or control.

Small Fires shows us the radical potential of the thing we do every day: the power of small fires burning everywhere.

    This book contains these titles:
Kierkegaard - Søren Kierkegaard, often regarded as the father of existentialism, was born on May 5, 1813, in Copenhagen, Denmark. His early life was marked by tragedy, as his mother died when he was just a child, and his father, a deeply religious man, instilled in him a sense of guilt and the weight of existential questioning. Kierkegaard’s relationship with his father deeply influenced his philosophical development, particularly in his exploration of faith, despair, and the individual's relationship with God.
Jean-Paul Sartre - Jean-Paul Sartre, a towering figure in 20th-century philosophy, is perhaps best known for his development of existentialism, a school of thought that emphasizes individual freedom, choice, and the creation of meaning in an otherwise indifferent universe. Sartre’s philosophy arises from the existentialist tradition but distinguishes itself through its rigorous approach to human freedom and responsibility. At the heart of Sartre's thought is the idea that human beings are condemned to be free, burdened with the constant task of making choices without any external justification or predetermined essence.
