Synopsis

For her sixth birthday, animal-loving Alicia is given her first pet, a guinea pig she names Annie. But while Alicia is making a vegetable-fruit cake for Annie's birthday, Annie disappears. Where is she? Alicia can hear her younger brother and sister – the dynamic duo, Jackson and Jillian – arguing in the bathroom. AND, she hears squeaking. Will Alicia be able to avert a near-disaster and make sure Annie stays safe? "Alicia and Annie" is written for read-aloud and for early readers. A healthy recipe, and interactive questions to promote memory recall and emotional intelligence are included. ABOUT THE THREE BOOK SERIES: I was in my classroom when a student asked, “I wonder what my sister is doing right now?” The student’s question made me think about a child’s emerging concept of time: that of being aware of life happening elsewhere, outside of the child’s own experience. Each book in the Sapphire Family Series is told from a different point of view: that of the twins, in "Jackson and Jillian," their older sister, Alicia in "Alicia and Annie," and big brother, Mason in "Mason and Invincible Igor." All three books take place during the same period of time, early evening. Although the books can stand alone, read together they offer a three-dimensional exploration of sibling interactions and family dynamics. Reading a story from different points of view is a first step in thinking beyond oneself. My intention is that the Sapphire Family Series will offer children compelling characters with whom they can identify and grow, and present positive, realistic family dynamics that will delight them.

"When Mai's family discovers that Vietnam government soldiers will soon apprehend her father and grandmother, the family slips away in the night. They trudge through the swamps of the Mekong Delta toward the sea. The gut-wrenching trip to Hong Kong is just another step toward a new life, which the family eventually finds. Whelan's characters are distinctive, and her story is riveting, haunting, and memorable, reflecting the human virtues of determination, hope, love, and courage in the face of the most devastating of circumstances and injustices." —Booklist.

"A Tale of Two Cities" by Charles Dickens is a historical novel written in the mid-19th century. Set against the backdrop of the French Revolution, the story begins by exploring the social and political turmoil of the era, introducing key themes such as resurrection, sacrifice, and the contrast between oppression and liberty.
The narrative follows Mr. Jarvis Lorry on his mission to retrieve Dr. Alexandre Manette, an imprisoned former physician who has been "recalled to life" after years of suffering. Dickens vividly depicts the contrasting conditions in England and France, highlighting the hardships faced by ordinary people.
A notable scene unfolds as Mr. Lorry travels on a Dover mail coach and encounters a mysterious messenger who delivers a message concerning Dr. Manette. Upon arriving in Paris, the ominous undertones of the Revolution are palpable, with Madame Defarge's wine shop symbolizing the growing discontent.
The story hints at the challenges ahead as the characters intertwine in a tale of personal and political upheaval, setting the stage for a drama that explores the quest for justice in the face of tyranny.
