Synopsis

In "Eris," Robert W. Chambers delves into the realms of myth and psychological tension to weave a tapestry that is as engaging as it is disquieting. The narrative combines elements of symbolism and rich, impressionistic prose, reflecting Chambers' fascination with the occult and the enigmatic nature of human relationships. Set against the backdrop of early 20th-century anxieties, the text harmoniously reflects the shifting literary context, embodying the decadent and modernist movements that question reality and consciousness while drawing on classical mythology to inform contemporary dilemmas. Chambers, an American writer known for pioneering the horror genre, often explored themes of beauty and melancholy. His extensive travels and deep interests in art and mythology significantly influenced his creations. "Eris," in particular, showcases Chambers' engagement with the philosophical complexities of conflict and desire, encapsulated through his personal experiences and observations of a world on the brink of transformation. His unique perspective illuminates the intricate dance between chaos and order, making it a significant text of its time. Readers seeking an exploration of existential themes intertwined with lyrical prose will find "Eris" a compelling and thought-provoking read. Chambers'Äô insight into human nature and the mystical elements he employs create a rich reading experience that resonates with anyone interested in the deeper questions of life and art.

The story traces the history of the titular street in a New England city, presumably Boston, from its first beginnings as "but a path" in colonial times to a quasi-supernatural occurrence in the years immediately following World War I. As the city grows up around the street, it is planted with many trees and built along with "simple, beautiful houses of brick and wood", each with a rose garden. As the Industrial Revolution runs its course, the area degenerates into a run-down and polluted slum, with all of the street's old houses falling into disrepair.
After World War I and the October Revolution, the area becomes home to a community of Russian immigrants. Among the new residents is the leadership of a "vast band of terrorists," who are plotting the destruction of the United States on Independence Day. When the day arrives, the terrorists gather to do the deed, but before they can get started, all the houses in the street collapse concurrently on top of each other, killing them all. Observers at the scene testify that immediately after the collapse, they experienced visions of the trees and rose gardens that had once been in the street.

    It starts with a whisper.
Every night, just as the clock strikes three, Anna hears a voice on the other side of her bedroom door. Soft. Calm. Almost familiar. It calls her name, coaxing her to open it. She never does.
But when the whispers grow into conversations—when the voice begins to reveal things about her past she’s never told anyone—Anna starts to question her own mind. Is she sleep-deprived? Losing her grip on reality? Or has something found a way in?
As the nights stretch on and the boundaries between waking and nightmare blur, Anna realizes the voice isn’t alone. And it isn’t waiting anymore. It’s getting closer.
The Voice Behind My Door is a spine-tingling psychological horror that asks: how do you fight the darkness when it already knows your name?
