Synopsis

How far will four friends go for immortality? This novel is Hugo and Nebula Award–winning author “Robert Silverberg at his very best” (George R. R. Martin). After Eli, a scholarly college student, finds and translates an ancient manuscript called The Book of Skulls, he and his friends embark on a cross-country trip to Arizona in search of a legendary monastery where they hope to find the secret of immortality. On the journey with Eli, there’s Timothy, an upper-class WASP with a trust fund and a solid sense of entitlement; Ned, a cynical poet and alienated gay man; and Oliver, a Kansas farm boy who escaped his rural origins and now wants to escape death.   If they can find the House of Skulls where immortal monks allegedly reside, they’ll undergo a rigorous initiation. But do those eight grinning skulls mean the joke will be on them? For a sacrifice will be required. Two must die so that two may live forever . . .   Stretching the boundary between science fiction and horror, Robert Silverberg masterfully probes deeper existential questions of morality, brotherhood, and self-determined destiny in what Harlan Ellison refers to as “one of my favorite nightmare novels.”  This ebook features an illustrated biography of Robert Silverberg including rare images from the author’s personal collection.

Single mother Jill Everts brings three-year-old Daisy to New York, hoping her daughter will make friends and forget about her imaginary ones. But Daisy’s new reality scares Jill even more than the precocious child’s fantasy world. When Daisy meets Stephanie, James, and Nick at a Central Park playground, they recognize each other although they’ve never met before. Some wild circuitry seems to kick in; the four kids connect so powerfully, they can move objects without touching them. They can maybe even bring back the dead. What is their mysterious link? Why is a super secret government agent convinced that Daisy is the perfect human being—and why should Jill allow him to tap into her little girl’s mind? Then there’s the wife of Jill’s lover—how far will she go to get her hands on Daisy?   Although The Playgroup is about four extraordinary kids, it’s also about the dazzling potential in all three-year-olds. As every parent knows, only a gossamer wall stands between our hopes and fears for our children.

From the author of the horror classic Night of the Living Dead.
Children can get away with murder under the cover of midnight...
Cynthia and her brothers had heard the stories about grandpa, who could summon demons and compel people to die with a curse. Maybe they also possessed the ancient powers. At first, they caught smallish demons who had assumed the shapes of rabbits and birds and then, larger ones like those who resembled the neighbor kids.
Now, they are growing, and their powers are swelling, nourished by adult desires.
Soon, they will gather others like themselves from the earth's dark corners. Soon, they will begin the blood-drenched ceremonies performed one by one at midnight.

Living in a haunted house is going to be the death of me . . . Potentially literally. In an attempt to cleanse whatever entity Trina and I let into my house after our bout with a Ouija board, things have only gotten worse. When the entity begins to sap Drake's strength, I realize I have to do something and that something needs to be done now . . .While Drake does definitely drive me crazy with his pretentious airs, his womanizing ways and his jealousy, the idea of coming home to an empty house leaves me feeling . . . well, empty. Yes, it's true—I'm pretty fond of my ghostly Casanova.Meanwhile, whatever this entity is, it's getting stronger and more aggressive. It appears to be mimicking the attacks of the Axeman, a murderer who terrorized New Orleans over one hundred years earlier. And there's only so much Ryan can do to help me, considering he's corporeal. When forced to make a decision to protect Drake, I'll face a consequence that could put my blossoming relationship with Ryan on hold . . . forever.Contains mature themes.
