Synopsis

In a future society where violence has vanished from daily life, a single criminal brings the government to its knees. Laws still exist, councils still meet, and ideals still matter—but none of them can stop a man who is willing to threaten, kill, and take power by force. When reason fails and resistance is impossible, the ruling council makes a desperate decision: they will import help from a more brutal era. 
Their solution is a man pulled directly out of the twentieth century, someone shaped by a harsher world and untroubled by moral hesitation. He is given one task, one target, and a promised reward that makes sense only to someone from his own time. As he prepares to confront the tyrant holding the future hostage, the story tightens around a single question: what happens when a civilization survives by abandoning the values that defined it? 
Hero From Yesterday moves with cold efficiency and rising unease, forcing the listener to sit with every step of the plan as it unfolds. The tension does not come from whether violence will occur—it comes from who controls it, who benefits from it, and who must look away once it is done. Silverberg keeps the focus on choice and consequence, never allowing the listener the comfort of moral distance. 
Robert Silverberg was already a prolific presence in science fiction magazines by the time this story appeared, publishing extensively in venues such as Galaxy Science Fiction, If, Amazing Stories, and Science Fiction Adventures. His early work often explored future societies built on rational ideals—and then tested those ideals under pressure. Hero From Yesterday sits squarely in that tradition, pairing a brisk, almost clinical plot with a final revelation that reframes everything that came before it.
