Beschreibung

In "The Boy Scouts for City Improvement," Robert Shaler masterfully interlaces themes of civic responsibility, youth empowerment, and community activism within a framework inspired by the Boy Scouts movement. Set against the backdrop of early 20th-century America, Shaler articulates a vision where young individuals are called upon not just to develop personal skills, but also to engage actively in the betterment of their urban environments. The book employs a straightforward yet evocative prose style, rich with practical examples and anecdotes, aiming to inspire a generation to embrace social stewardship initiatives in their communities. Robert Shaler, an advocate for youth development and civic engagement, draws upon his extensive experiences in youth organizations and educational reform. His background in social work and community programs deeply informs the narrative and objectives of this work, reflecting his belief in the transformative power of young people when fostered with guidance and responsibility. Shaler's passion for social justice is palpable throughout the text, illuminating the profound influence of nurturing leadership qualities in adolescents. This book is a valuable resource for educators, community leaders, and parents who wish to inspire resilience and activism in the younger generation. "The Boy Scouts for City Improvement" will resonate with anyone interested in the intersection of youth development and civic engagement, as it not only charts a course for urban improvement but also empowers young readers to envision themselves as agents of change.

The opening years of the French and Indian War were disastrous for the British. Hindered by quarrelsome provincial councils, incompetent generals, and the redcoats' inability to adapt to wilderness warfare, Britain was losing the war. Learning that most of Britain's military resources were allocated to Louisbourg, the French launched a campaign along the weakened frontier. French Commander Louis-Joseph de Montcalm and his American Indian allies laid siege to Fort William Henry; Monro could not hold out and was forced to surrender. As part of the terms, the British regiment, colonial militia, and their camp followers would be allowed safe passage to nearby Fort Edward. The French watched in horror, however, as their Indian allies attacked the British column after it left the fort, an episode that sparked outrage and changed the tactics of the war.

Seen through the eyes of participants such as Louis Antoine de Bougainville, a scholarly young aide-de-camp, Jabez Fitch, an amiable Connecticut sergeant, and Kisensik, a proud Nipissing chief whose father once met Louis XIV in the marbled halls of Versailles, The Siege of Fort William Henry uses contemporary newspaper reports, official documents, private letters, and published memoirs to bring the narrative to life.

This book is Volume I of a three volume book plus accompanying website, www.bookaboutbooks.com, which adds to subjects already in the book or presents some books and subjects not contained in the books. The other volumes are available from the same booksellers as this volume. Note this 2024 publication date is a corrected version of the original version of this volume published in 2018.
A Book about Books discusses what nonfiction books and subjects the author believes are important to know about. This book tries to point to problems in how we live and to see if books have any answers. Even though the books are complete, the author will update the website periodically in the future.
    E. H. Bernstein is a former librarian turned author. The subtitle of the book describes the author's objective: "A handbook in three volumes to a choice of essential books, writers and subjects in order to understand the world we live in, about 'big questions' and possible answers, about books and writers that may improve people's lives, about neglected writers, and other books and subjects."
A Book about Books attempts to share what the author has learned from nearly 50 years of nonfiction reading and to provide the reader with samples of the most important authors and subjects from that reading.
While the book is based on research, it is intended to be a handbook or guide by trying to make that research understandable to the general reader and to students, and for teachers--by pointing to what the author believes is missing from today's education. A curriculum proposal for college teachers is on the website.
Note about how the volumes are related: each chapter is on a separate subject. So the chapters can be read individually, but the full message requires reading all the volumes. Volume I is important, but preliminary to the more important Volumes II and III. Note also that the book is not just about books, since other sources are also mentioned.
The author believes we should listen to many voices, so the book draws on many types of writers from different times and countries.
The author says: A contemporary writer once said that one of the purposes of writing is that books should be useful. I hope that my book will be of use.

It’s getting harder and harder to get by. Inflation. Stagnant wages. Spiraling costs of living. Even in the world’s wealthiest nation, it is too hard to earn enough money to thrive without a tremendous amount of privilege or luck. When so many people are struggling, what can we do? The Wages of Peace offers aspiring economic peacemakers an empathetic, informed perspective on today’s economy and the difficulty of getting by. Reporting back from his work in community development, Brian Humphreys unpacks the core needs of low-income households and communities, starting with living-wage jobs. He then offers practical steps to address complex socioeconomic challenges and become equipped to talk about money, work, and well-being. This includes confronting where our theologies of wealth and work have come up short and naming that when we put profits over people, we pay the price in despair and violence. Jesus calls us to seek shalom in the marketplace and the neighborhood. It’s time to dismantle inequality and work for an equitable peace.

Kennedy had traveled to the state to unite Texas Democrats where party leaders were feuding and extremists were contributing to political tensions. Kennedy knew an intra-party feud in Texas could jeopardize his chances of carrying the state for his 1964 re-election campaign.
