"The Adventure of the Second Stain", one of the 56 Sherlock Holmes short stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is one of 13 stories in the cycle collected as The Return of Sherlock Holmes and the only unrecorded case mentioned passively by Watson to be written. Doyle ranked "The Adventure of the Second Stain" eighth in his list of his twelve favourite Holmes stories.
Lord Bellinger, the Prime Minister, and the Right Honourable Trelawney Hope, the Secretary of State for European Affairs, come to Holmes in the matter of a document stolen from Hope's dispatch box, which he kept at home in Whitehall Terrace when not at work. If divulged, this document could bring about very dire consequences for all Europe, even war. They are loath to tell Holmes at first the exact nature of the document's contents, but when Holmes declines to take on their case, they tell him that it was a rather injudicious letter from a foreign potentate. It disappeared from the dispatch box one evening when Hope's wife was out at the theatre for four hours. No-one in the house knew about the document, not even the Secretary's wife. None of the servants could have guessed what was in the box.

Holmes receives a letter from a man named Nathan Garrideb of 136 Little Ryder Street,[2] in which the writer asks for help in finding someone else who shares his unusual surname. He has been informed by an American, John Garrideb of Kansas, that if he can find another Garrideb he stands to inherit a large fortune.
The American visits Holmes and Watson at 221B Baker Street, and is not pleased that Nathan has involved a private detective. John Garrideb, who claims to be a lawyer, spins a ridiculous story about Alexander Hamilton Garrideb, a millionaire land tycoon he had met in Kansas, years earlier. Hamilton Garrideb was said to have bequeathed his $15 million estate to John, with the proviso that he find two more men of the same surname to share it with equally. John says he has come to England to seek out people with this name, having failed to find anyone in his home country. So far, he has found only Nathan.

Inspired by true events, blending white–knuckle suspense with wartime romance, a woman who would become known as the female Schindler risks everything to smuggle children out of the ghetto and away from the grasp of the Gestapo . . .
Warsaw, 1939. The Nazi invasion shatters the city, as Nazi banners rise, hunger gnaws, and walls create a ghetto. SS patrols prowl and trains stand ready for “resettlement” camps of Treblinka.
Granted access to the ghetto as a “public health specialist,” Irena Sendler steps through the gates with forged papers and begins with the smallest, most dangerous act: smuggling children out and away from certain death.
With help from a group of rebels, Jewish residents, and her lover, Irena builds a pipeline under the occupier’s nose, using any means necessary, including the city’s sewers.
At unimaginable personal risk, she keeps one last secret hidden. But if she is caught the truth threatens to remain hidden forever . . .
Inspired by the true story of Irena Sendler, the Polish social worker who helped rescue more than 2,500 Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto, The Angel of Warsaw is an unforgettable, heart–stopping tale of resistance, sacrifice, bravery, and love.

“What a fantastic book! I was gripped from the start and read late into the night.” —Goodreads reviewer, five starsA series of bizarre crimes across the English city of Sheffield brings a police detective and a PI together in an increasingly dangerous game . . . Liam Bennet has just quit the force to become a private detective—and to his frustration, his first case is a weird petty crime while his good friend acting DCI Liz Miller is assigned a murder. Two murders, in fact—one recent, the other involving a skeletonized body, but both linked by pictures of dice at the scenes. After Liz is attacked on the job, Liam visits her in hospital and they discover another odd connection: both Liam and the police are looking into teachers who’ve been victimised. Meanwhile, more dice keep turning up—though the crimes connected to them seem utterly random, ranging from the serious to the bizarre. As the two close in on the mystery, will they be able to identify a pattern—or is their luck about to run out?
