Via wagon routes or interstates, on desert highways or in the landscapes of northern England, through nature and through human culture, questions of ownership and power are writ into the journey.   In 2023, Nine Arches Press launched their nationwide Primers scheme for a seventh time, in search of exciting new voices in poetry, with Katie Hale as selecting editor. After reading through hundreds of anonymous entries, and narrowing down the choices from longlist to shortlist, three poets emerged as clear choices: Jade Cuttle, Antonia Taylor and Laura Varnam.
  Primers Volume Seven now brings together a showcase from three distinctive poets, exploring everything from mudlarking and making a 'mossary', to the borderlands of conflicts and a bold retelling of an Old English epic.   The Dymock Poets - Meeting of...

  In the village of Dymock, just by the river Leadon in Gloucester, in the years that were leading up to the Great War, six poets were creating literary history.   
  Living, visiting, reading and writing in this small area their friendships, as they intermingled and influenced each other’s lives, would create the enduring legacy of The Dymock Poets. 
  And these were not just run of the mill scribes.  Included in their number were Robert Frost, Edward Thomas and Rupert Brooke.  These three, together with John Drinkwater, Lascelles Abercrombie and Wilfrid Wilson Gibson, were the beating heart of the group.    
  In his volume we gather together some of their finest verse to best illustrate their poetical careers as well as including poems from the visiting Eleanor Farejon, a close friend of Thomas and his wife.

  The Weary Blues

  Langston Hughes is a widely celebrated African American writer and important leader of the 1920s Harlem Renaissance. Deeply inspired by the great poet Walt Whitman, Hughes’ own writings gave voice to the Black community in the American literary canon. His assertion that “I, too, sing America” echoes through history and continues to be a battle cry in the fight for fair representation and equality. 
   
  The Weary Blues, published in 1926, was Hughes’ first collection of poetry. He was only twenty-four years old at the time, but his insights carry wisdom beyond his years. Hughes made his literary debut at the height of Jim Crow when racial segregation ran deep through American society. Through the pain and hardship, there is also an unshakable pride in his African American heritage.
