Synopsis

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice. When the young minister Murdoch Soulis takes up his first parish in the lonely Scottish village of Balweary, he scorns the country folk and their superstitions – and against all their dark muttering, he keeps on as his housekeeper old Janet M'Clour, a woman the whole parish swears has sold herself to the Devil. After the villagers seize and half-drown her, Janet returns to the manse changed: her neck wrenched and twisted, her head lolling at a hideous angle, yet still she moves about her work. Through one sweltering, thunder-heavy summer the minister tells himself there is nothing wrong. But on the blackest night of the year he learns the truth of what walks under his roof – and why the dead should never be made to serve the living.
