Synopsis

Stevenson’s brooding historical romance demonstrates his most abiding theme—the elemental struggle between good and evil—as it unfolds against a hauntingly beautiful Scottish landscape, amid the fierce loyalties and violent enmities that characterized Scottish history. When two brothers attempt to split their loyalties between the warring factions of the 1745 Jacobite rising, one family finds itself tragically divided.

H.G. Wells' novel, "The War of the Worlds," made people start to look at the sky in a whole new way—from over their shoulders. Written in a journalistic style, blending fantastic events with real-life locations and actual science of its day, Wells' novel chronicles the sudden Martian invasion of our planet Earth. "The War of the Worlds," and its realistic approach, launched a new, chilling genre of fiction and went on to inspire numerous variations and adaptations for radio, television, comics and film.

Journey to the Center of the Earth is a classic 1864 science fiction novel by Jules Verne. The story involves German professor Otto Lidenbrock who believes there are volcanic tubes going toward the center of the Earth. He, his nephew Axel, and their guide Hans descend into the Icelandic volcano Snæfellsjökull, encountering many adventures, including prehistoric animals and natural hazards, before eventually coming to the surface again in southern Italy, at the Stromboli volcano. From a scientific point of view, this story has not aged quite as well as other Verne stories, since most of his ideas about what the interior of the Earth contains have since been disproved, but it still manages to captivate audiences when regarded as a classic fantasy novel.

"Northanger Abbey" is a satirical novel that tells the story of Catherine Morland, a young, naïve girl who is taken to Bath by family friends for a season of socializing and romance. Catherine is a great reader of gothic novels, which often lead her to imagine plots and intrigues where there are none. At Bath, Catherine meets the charming Henry Tilney and his sister Eleanor, who introduce her to their family estate, Northanger Abbey. Catherine becomes infatuated with Henry and begins to imagine that his family is hiding secrets and mysteries, much like the gothic novels she loves to read. She begins to explore the Abbey with this in mind, but her fantasies soon come crashing down when she discovers that there is no hidden intrigue at Northanger Abbey. Read in English, unabridged.

Alone in the city, a young woman meets a man who promises to make her dreams come true. Eighteen-year-old Carrie is drawn to the glamour, wealth, and excitement of Chicago. But to be part of this glittering world, she will need much more money than she can even imagine. The only jobs she can find offer harsh conditions and little pay. Finally, inexperienced and desperate, she allows the smooth-talking salesman Charles Drouet to buy her meals and pretty clothes. Will Carrie ever find true happiness? And how much will she have to give up to get what she wants?Theodore Dreiser's unsparing story of a country girl's rise to riches as the mistress of a wealthy man marked the beginning of the naturalist movement in America. Both its subject matter and Dreiser's objective, nonmoralizing approach made it highly controversial, and only a heavily edited version could be published in 1900.
