The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam Translated by Edward FitzGerald Narrated by Denis Daly Omar Khayyam (1048 - 1131) was a true polymath.  A distinguished mathematician,  astronomer and philosopher,  he is best known today for his Rubaiyat, a collection of rubai, or rhyming quatrains,  of which he is estimated to have composed at least 500.  Together with the work of Hafiz and Rumi, Khayyam's poetry represents the high point of classical Persian literature. Edward Fitzgerald was neither the first nor the most scholarly of the translators of the quatrains of Omar Khayyam, but due to his remarkable abilities as a poet, his versions have been accepted as classic literature in their own right. During his lifetime Fitzgerald published four editions of his translation - in 1859, 1868, 1872 and 1879 - and a fifth edition was released posthumously in 1889. In this recording are presented readings of all five editions as well as biographical material about Fitzgerald and Omar Khayyam and a laudatory poem by Andrew Lang,  which were published as part of the Fourth Edition. “I am large, I contain multitudes”
Walt Whitman published his first collection of poetry, Leaves of Grass, in 1855. Whitman spent most of his professional life writing and revising it multiple times until his death.
It was highly controversial during its time for its explicit sexual imagery, and Whitman was subject to derision by many contemporary critics. Over time, however, the collection has infiltrated popular culture and been recognised as one of the central works of American poetry.

Slabs of the Sunburnt West -...

    Carl Sandburg

This is Carl Sandburg's fourth collection of poetry. His signature style, a rough-and-ready free verse that often transforms into poetic prose, is in full view. Like Whitman before him and like Masters and Frost in his own time, he puts his focus directly on life as he sees it around him, life in the rough-and-tumble Chicago of the early 20th century and life in the American West, at a time when that wild country was finally succumbing to civilization.
Sandburg can be emotionally brutal; he writes of death with a rare and unflinching directness. He can also be emotionally transcendent, writing of the beauty of the world with a soaring eye. Sandburg is a newspaperman turned poet, or perhaps a poet turned journalist; his writing has the direct immediacy of the daily beat. There is nothing dated about his work; in fact, he speaks to us today as if he wrote today, hitting fundamentals about the way we live with clarity and force.
