Synopsis

Robert Green Ingersoll (1833-1899), nicknamed "the Great Agnostic", was an American lawyer, writer, and orator during the Golden Age of Free Thought, who campaigned in defense of agnosticism.
On October 30, 1880, Ingersoll was introduced as "the Great Agnostic" by Rev. Henry Ward Beecher, before a political speech delivered to a large audience at the Academy of Music in Brooklyn. In a 1881 lecture entitled The Great Infidels, he attacked the doctrine of Hell. The Ingersoll’s lecture The Great Infidels, which we propose to our readers today, was finally published in New York in 1921. It remains one of the most important works for understanding the libertarian thought of this great and extraordinary American intellectual.
«Have all the clergymen, monks, friars, ministers, bishops, priests, cardinals and popes, from the day of Pentecost to the last election, done as much for human liberty as Thomas Paine? As much for Science as Charles Darwin? What would the world be if Infidels had never been?».

Women in Ancient Rome - Roles...

In Ancient Rome, women’s roles were predominantly shaped by social class, family status, and cultural expectations. Their daily lives varied significantly based on whether they were elite, freeborn, or enslaved, but a common thread was their primary responsibility within the household. Roman society placed great emphasis on the domestic sphere, where women were expected to manage the home, care for children, and support their husbands. Despite limited political power, women played crucial roles within their families and communities.
Elite women, often from patrician families, had access to wealth and social influence, but their activities were still largely confined to the private domain. These women managed large households, supervised slaves, and ensured the proper upbringing of their children. They also engaged in weaving, spinning, and other domestic crafts, which were considered virtuous pursuits even among the wealthy. While they did not hold formal political roles, elite women could indirectly influence public affairs through their relationships with powerful men, including husbands, fathers, and sons. Their ability to host social gatherings allowed them to form networks that could subtly shape political alliances.
For women of the lower classes, life was markedly different. These women often worked outside the home as vendors, laborers, or artisans, contributing to their family's income. Unlike elite women, who enjoyed a degree of protection within their households, working-class women faced the challenges of manual labor and financial insecurity. Some even managed small businesses or worked as midwives, nurses, or seamstresses. Despite the hardships, these women exhibited resilience and resourcefulness, balancing work and family responsibilities in a demanding social environment.

Born in poverty in India, Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895-1986) became a leading spiritual and philosophical thinker whose ideas continue to influence us today. George Bernard Shaw declared that he was the most beautiful human being he had ever seen and Aldous Huxley was one of his close friends. Whether debating politics with Nehru, discussing theories with Rupert Sheldrake and Iris Murdoch, or challenging his students not to take his words at face value, Krishnamurti engaged fully with every aspect of life. He is regarded by many modern religious figures as a great teacher, an extraordinary individual with revolutionary insights; Joseph Campbell, Alan Watts, Eckhart Tolle and Deepak Chopra are all indebted to his writings.

Freedom from the Known is one of Krishnamurti's most accessible works. Here, he reveals how we can free ourselves radically and immediately from the tyranny of the expected. By changing ourselves, we can alter the structure of society and our relationships. The vital need for change and the recognition of its very possibility form an essential part of this important book's message.
