Beschreibung

In "The Essential Works of Robert G. Ingersoll," readers are presented with a compelling anthology of the orator's most significant writings, showcasing his passionate advocacy for free thought, skepticism, and secularism during the late 19th century. Ingersoll's eloquent prose and rhetorical prowess shine through in essays that challenge religious dogma and promote the liberation of human intellect. This collection highlights his unique approach, blending philosophy, politics, and personal anecdote, making his arguments not only logical but deeply resonant, all while situated within the broader intellectual landscape of the Gilded Age, a time marked by dramatic social and technological upheaval. Robert Green Ingersoll, often referred to as the "Great Agnostic," was a prominent lawyer, orator, and political activist in post-Civil War America. His early encounters with religion, coupled with his advocacy for civil rights and separation of church and state, shaped his critical perspectives. Ingersoll's formidable public speaking skills and fearless intellect earned him both admiration and controversy, allowing him to become a leading voice for secularism at a time when such views were often marginalized. This anthology is highly recommended for anyone seeking to understand the foundations of modern skepticism and the role of secularism in society. Ingersoll's incisive insights not only provoke thought but also inspire courage in questioning established norms, making this collection an invaluable resource for readers interested in philosophy, history, and the evolution of free thought.

Until April 14, 1865, John Wilkes Booth was one of the most famous actors of his time, and President Abraham Lincoln had even watched him perform. But his most significant performance at a theater did not take place on the stage. That night, Booth became one of history’s most infamous assassins when he assassinated President Lincoln at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C.
In 1880, Civil War veteran James Garfield was running as a Republican for president, and one of his supporters was a man named Charles Guiteau, who wrote and circulated a speech called “Garfield vs. Hancock” that aimed to rally support for the Republican candidate. Though few knew it, Guiteau’s family had already deemed him insane and attempted to keep him committed in an asylum, only to have him manage an escape from confinement.
In September 1901, the city of Buffalo was full of celebration. The Pan-American Exposition was ongoing, and it brought notable figures to northern New York, including President William McKinley, who had been reelected less than a year earlier. But also in Buffalo was Leon Czolgosz, a young man who had turned to anarchy years earlier after losing his job, Embracing his philosophy wholeheartedly, Czolgosz believed it was his mission to take down a powerful leader he considered oppressive, and McKinley’s attendance gave him the chance.
In the annals of American history, few moments have been so thoroughly seared into the nation’s conscience that Americans can remember exactly where and when they heard about an earth-shattering event. In the 20th century, there was Pearl Harbor and the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. November 22, 1963 started as a typical Friday, and many Americans were unaware that President Kennedy was even heading to Dallas, Texas.

A highly entertaining read for anyone interested in English history and culture, this great myth-busting book takes you on a great ride through history and the national character. Think we're the land of Punch and Judy and Morris Dancing? Think again as both traditions started in southern Europe. Love Winston Churchill's wartime speeches? Well, they were recorded by an actor.
Packed with details on real English history, the book explodes a range of national myths from bluebirds in Dover (they are not indigenous European birds) to the origin of the Cornish pasty (they might have been invented in London), from our stiff upper lip (an Americanism) to where you can spend a Scottish bank note. English arts, entertainment, food, drink, kings and queens, traditions as well as politics are all covered to give you a fascinating insight into the true England.
Includes an additional chapter on Scottish, Welsh and Irish myths that we've been peddling in England for decades and need to be laid to rest.

This is a summary & it does not accompany the official.
"Never Enough" by Jennifer Breheny Wallace delves into the high-pressure world of today's students, who strive relentlessly for success and often find themselves overwhelmed. This book explores the pervasive culture of toxic achievement, where students pack their schedules with activities and face intense competition, leading to rising rates of anxiety and depression.
Wallace investigates the origins of this culture and its deep-seated roots in society, driven by income inequality and limited opportunities. Through interviews and research, the book highlights how children are absorbing the message that their worth is solely tied to their accomplishments.
However, "Never Enough" offers a different perspective, emphasizing the importance of children feeling like they matter intrinsically, regardless of their external achievements. It advocates for parents and educators to adopt a mindset that values a child's sense of self-worth and contribution to a larger community. By doing so, the book argues, children can develop resilience, self-confidence, and psychological security.
With insightful stories and practical guidance, "Never Enough" provides an urgent and humane perspective on the challenges facing today's teenagers and offers a framework for positive change in how we nurture and support them.
