    Control Freak - The Least...

Life as a carefree kid ended for TJ with a diagnosis of dyslexia-ADHD. He would have to repeat the 3rd grade at another school and was henceforth to be learning challenged, a person viewed through his limitations. His response was to take control of his world so that he wouldn’t be embarrassed. He’d be funny: laughed with, not laughed at. He’d excel in athletics: swimming, soccer, football. God couldn’t be trusted. Look what he’d allowed! TJ’s life was tightly controlled, by him. Until one morning when TJ mysteriously lost his health to a strange, a terminal disease. Here was something he couldn’t control. Could God? Would God?
This is the story of one man’s wrestling with God over control. It’s the story of his discovery that being a control freak could mean the destruction of his family and of his ability to contribute, or even survive in this life.
    Would he wield or yield?
I am a recovering control freak. Being a control freak was a way of life. The only way I knew I could survive and thrive. I treated control like it was the most valuable player that could make anything happen. What a joke.
They say in life that “life lessons” are the best teachers, preferably someone else’s. Well, I didn’t listen. I had to learn the hard way. Doing things my way, all by myself. So, I became a control freak who craved one thing, More control. For much of my life, I insisted on controlling everything. Every single thing. Like an addict, I had an unquenchable thirst for control, especially in times when God seemed to be uncaring and absent. I believed that only the perseverance of total control would get me the results I wanted. Until I finally discovered Who is actually in control. Spoiler alert; it’s not me. A few short years ago I found myself in a living hell where all hope seemed lost. I shouldn't even be alive. No one could’ve ever dared to dream that I’d get from there to here, not even me. But God was faithful and never let me go.

    Sourcebooks for Our Drawings

Sourcebooks for Our Drawings is a book steeped in place: the rural idyll of a Southeastern New Brunswick farmhouse, the author's childhood suburbia, and the commercial sprawl of contemporary Atlantic Canada. Each piece provides a snapshot of New Brunswick in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, a place at once unique and startlingly not-so in our globalized world. Part fragmentary memoir, part genre hybrid, and entirely a compilation of familial lore, Jacobs’ new book—his first in prose—is a singular and idiosyncratic portrait of New Brunswick, an alternate history and an antidote to dry regionalism. A formally innovative and very personal work, Sourcebooks for Our Drawings nevertheless addresses universal concerns about our fraught relationships with nostalgia and memory.

In this landmark collection, William T. Vollmann offers a kaleidoscopic retrospective of the visual artwork he has produced over four decades, with new commentary from Vollmann on his process, inspiration, and the many intersections with his writing.

The celebrated author of over twenty-five books (among them the National Book Award–winning novel Europe Central; the seven-volume Rising Up and Rising Down, based on Vollmann's career as a war correspondent; and the two-volume climate change investigation Carbon Ideologies), Vollmann's equally ambitious and prolific career as a photographer, printmaker, and painter reflects the artist’s deep interest in people existing on the margins, a profound empathy for his subjects, and the humility and generosity to meet them on their terms.

In Shadows of Love, Shadows of Loneliness, a series of essays commissioned especially for this book lays out Vollmann's views on what photographs can and should say, how he chooses what to represent (beauty, suffering, compassion, love, desire, ideology), thoughts on photographic consensuality, and any number of technical descriptions. Particularly useful for Vollmann fans and scholars are the cross-references between these artistic and photographic projects and his books.

A day in the life of a student nurse, what could possibly go wrong? If you're training to be a nurse right now, or just fancy an insight into what they do, read this book. It will tell you that sleepless nights from constant worrying is absolutely normal. To make mistakes and want the ground to swallow you up then get over them; this is normal. To eat and drink very little all day and suffer with constipation; this is, yes you guessed it: normal.

No one tells you anything when you sign up. In fact, they forget to tell you very important details that actually make you believe you are losing your mind. Delirium is such a thing. But what will come out of this is a degree in nursing, followed by a registration which will give you the entitlement to being called a registered nurse-adults or children’s depends on what you chose. For me it’s an adult registered nurse. Don’t get overly excited you will have to pay £120 every year to have it renewed. You will need to be in a union of some sort, which equals more cost. On a lighter note the memories, the friendships and the experiences you receive, nursing profession: I love you.
