Over time, capitalism has evolved in response to global events, technological advancements, and changes in social and political structures. However, a fundamental aspect of capitalism that persists is the inherent inequality it creates. Inequality in capitalist societies can be understood in several forms: wealth inequality, income inequality, and social inequality. Wealth inequality refers to the uneven distribution of assets like property, stocks, and savings, where a small percentage of the population controls a large share of the wealth. Income inequality, on the other hand, concerns the differences in wages and salaries among workers, managers, and capital owners. Social inequality arises from disparities in access to resources like education, healthcare, and housing, which are often shaped by economic factors. At the heart of capitalist inequality is the idea that economic success is determined by individual effort, entrepreneurship, and market performance. While this promotes competition and innovation, it also leads to stark divides between the wealthy and the poor. Those who control capital—such as land, factories, or intellectual property—are in a position to accumulate wealth far faster than those who rely solely on their labor. David Hume’s Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion had not yet been published when he died in 1776. Even though the manuscript was mostly written during the 1750s, it did not appear until 1779. The subject itself was too delicate and controversial, and Hume’s dialectical examination of religious knowledge was especially provocative. What should we teach young people about religion? The characters Demea, Cleanthes, and Philo passionately present and defend three sharply different answers to that question. Demea opens the dialogue with a position derived from Rene; Descartes and Father Malebranche—God’s nature is a mystery, but God’s existence can be proved logically. Cleanthes attacks that view, both because it leads to mysticism and because it attempts the impossible task of trying to establish existence on the basis pure reason, without appeal to sense experience. As an alternative, he offers a proof of both God’s existence and God’s nature based on the same kind of scientific reasoning established by Copernicus, Galileo, and Newton. Taking a skeptical approach, Philo presents a series of arguments that question any attempt to use reason as a basis for religious faith. He suggests that human beings might be better off without religion. A large, widening gap has opened between Western democracies' international ambitions and their domestic political capacity to support them. On issues ranging from immigration and international trade to national security, new political parties on the left and the right are rejecting the core foreign policy principles that Western governments have championed for over half a century. In Geopolitics and Democracy, Peter Trubowitz and Brian Burgoon provide a powerful new explanation for the rise of anti-globalism in the West. Trubowitz and Burgoon show that support for globalism has been receding for thirty years in Western parties and legislatures. They trace the anti-globalist backlash to foreign policy decisions that mainstream parties and party elites made after the end of the Cold War. "The Great Wall of China" is a short story by Franz Kafka. While written in 1917, it was not published until 1930, seven years after his death. Its first publication occurred in Der Morgen, a German literary magazine. A year later, Max Brod included it in Beim Bau der Chinesischen Mauer, the first posthumous collection of short stories by Franz Kafka.Contained within the story is a parable that was separately published as "A Message from the Emperor" ("Eine kaiserliche Botschaft") in 1919 in the collection Ein Landarzt (A Country Doctor). Some sub-themes of the story include why the wall was built piecemeal (in small sections in many different places), the relationship of the Chinese with the past and the present and the emperor's imperceptible presence. The story is told in the first person by an older man from a southern province.The first English translation, by Willa and Edwin Muir, was published by Martin Secker in London in 1933. It appeared in The Great Wall of China. Stories and Reflections (New York City: Schocken Books, 1946).
