Gus Van Sant’s film and the ’90s cult of the alternative Gus Van Sant’s 1991 indie darling My Own Private Idaho perplexed and provoked, inspiring a new ethos for a new decade: being different was better than being good. Gentlemen of the Shade examines how the film was a coming-of-age for a generation of young people who would embrace the alternative and bring their outsider perspectives to sustainability, technology, gender constructs, and social responsibility. My Own Private Idaho ― fragmented and saturated with colour and dirt and a painfully beautiful masculinity ― also crept into popular media, and its influence can still be traced. R.E.M. Portlandia. Hipsterism. James Franco. Referencing the often-funny and sometimes-tragic cultural touchstones of the past 26 years, Gentlemen of the Shade sets the film as social bellwether for the many outsiders who were looking to join the right, or any, revolution.

In this speech, a young Theodore Roosevelt describes what he believes are the key principles to good citizenship. In addition to emphasizing ethical behavior, Roosevelt takes a firm stance on the necessity of engaging in politics and voting. He states unflinchingly, “The people who say that they have not time to attend to politics are simply saying that they are unfit to live in a free community.” To be “a good American citizen,” Roosevelt says one must boldly engage with the issues our nation faces today, and in doing so, shape its future.

"A great scholar of the American past, David O. Stewart has brilliantly mined what has come before to guide us in our own, all-too-urgent American present. An important and timely volume." ~ Jon Meacham, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The American Struggle
What did America's founders say about democracy—and can we remain true to their vision for America?
Two hundred fifty years ago, passionate men attempted to create something the world had never seen before: a nation built not on kings or armies, but on ideas where the people ruled.
In The Democracy We Must Keep, historian David O. Stewart takes readers inside the nine key documents that shaped the formation of the United States—from Patrick Henry's thunderous cry for liberty to the carefully crafted design of a government chosen by the people, with limits on all officials holding power under the Constitution.
Through the words of seven visionary founders—Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Hamilton, Gouverneur Morris, and others—Stewart shows how a fragile experiment in self-government took shape.
These men were not saints. They argued passionately. They worried that the new nation might fall apart. Yet together, they forged the principles that must still define American democracy.

    - That power must be limited.
    - That leaders must answer to the people.
    - That individual rights must be protected by law.
As the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary, The Democracy We Must Keep urges readers to rediscover core ideas that built the nation—and to consider what it will take to protect them.
Accessible, engaging, and timely, this book is for anyone who wants to understand how American democracy started, and why it still matters.
NOTE: This recording contains the complete narrative text. Appendix documents are available in the print and ebook editions.
"The American experiment was built through action based upon the ideas preserved in our founding documents. In this compelling call to engage with our past to secure our future, David Stewart shows that democracy is not a spectator sport, but a responsibility each generation must uphold." ~ Colleen Shogan, 11th Archivist of the United States, CEO of In Pursuit
"In The Democracy We Must Keep, noted historian David O. Stewart provides an inspiring antidote to America's current dangers of one-man rule and unprincipled government. Alarmed citizens can do no better than read Stewart's compact account of how America's flame of liberty was kindled, and how we must restore it." ~ James McGrath Morris is a New York Times best-selling biographer and author of Pulitzer: A Life in Politics, Print, and Power
"The cause of America is...the cause of all mankind," the pamphleteer Tom Paine wrote in 1776. Grappling with very human sins and flaws, Americans have led the cause of freedom from Valley Forge to Omaha Beach, and promoted human rights from Seneca Falls to Selma. But now a deviant strain of oppression stalks America: What better moment for David O. Stewart, jurist and historian, to bring us The Democracy We Must Keep, a crisp and eloquent reminder of our better selves. "Only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger," John F. Kennedy said. "I do not shrink from this responsibility, I welcome it." So does Stewart, and in his books we find the energy, the faith and the devotion that Kennedy called for. The trumpet summons us again and Stewart, to our good fortune, is a virtuoso. ~ John A. Farrell, Author of Richard Nixon: The Life, Pulitzer Prize finalist

Golda Mabovitch Meir (May 3, 1898 - December 8, 1978) was an Israeli politician who served as the fourth prime minister of Israel from 1969 to 1974. She was Israel's first and only female head of government, the first female head of government in the Middle East, and the fourth elected female head of government or state in the world. Born in Kiev in the Russian Empire to Jewish parents, Meir immigrated as a child with her family to the United States in 1906. She graduated from the Milwaukee State Normal School and found work as a teacher. While in Milwaukee, she embraced the Labor Zionist movement and, in 1921, Meir and her husband emigrated to Mandatory Palestine. She was a signatory of the Israeli Declaration of Independence in 1948, and was elected to the Knesset in 1949. She served as Labor Minister until 1956, when she was appointed Foreign Minister by Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion. A controversial figure in Israel, Meir has been lionized as a founder of the state and described as the "Iron Lady" of Israeli politics, but also widely blamed for the country being caught by surprise during the war of 1973.

In this 1970 recording, Meir answers questions shortly after a Swissair Flight 330 from Zurich to Hong Kong, with a planned stopover in Tel Aviv, was brought down by a bomb planted by two PLO members soon after takeoff, killing all 47 passengers and crew.

Barred - Why the Innocent Can’t...

A groundbreaking exposé of how our legal system makes it nearly impossible to overturn wrongful convictions Thousands of innocent people are behind bars in the United States. But proving their innocence and winning their release is nearly impossible. In Barred, legal scholar Daniel S. Medwed argues that our justice system’s stringent procedural rules are largely to blame for the ongoing punishment of the innocent. Those rules guarantee criminal defendants just one opportunity to appeal their convictions directly to a higher court. Afterward, the wrongfully convicted can pursue only a few narrow remedies. Even when there is strong evidence of a miscarriage of justice, rigid guidelines, bias, and deference toward lower courts all too often prevent exoneration. Offering clear explanations of legal procedures alongside heart-wrenching stories of their devastating impact, Barred exposes how the system is stacked against the innocent and makes a powerful call for change. “In our screwed-up legal system, it’s fairly easy to convict an innocent person and send them to prison. Tragically, and as Daniel S. Medwed explains so clearly in Barred, it is almost impossible to get them out. Punishing the innocent is not just a problem in other places. We do it every day in America.” ―John Grisham“By blending tales of real-life wrongful convictions with straightforward explanations of legal procedures, Medwed’s Barred demystifies the mysterious path for the innocent after trial. His clear and engaging writing style makes the topic accessible to anyone interested in the hazards of our criminal justice system. A must-read!”―Sister Helen Prejean, author of Dead Man Walking“Barred is a stunning account of the myriad procedural roadblocks that keep innocent people trapped in our nation’s prisons. With harrowing stories from his public-defense practice, Medwed reveals how prosecutors, judges, and other officials revere finality and efficiency over fairness and truth. By exposing this rampant disregard for defendants’ culpability, Barred powerfully calls into question the justice of the entire criminal punishment system and proposes urgent ways to mitigate its damage.”―Dorothy Roberts, author of Torn Apart“For every innocent prisoner we’ve freed over the past three decades, countless others remain behind bars. Barred brilliantly illustrates the absurdity of this situation: how it is far too easy to convict the innocent, and far too hard to correct those mistakes.” ―Barry Scheck, cofounder of the Innocence Project“For every newspaper photo of an innocent person exiting the prison gates, clutching the hand of their triumphant lawyer, there are uncountable others whom we will never allow to see that day—who will die in prison because our laws make it so difficult to prove their innocence in court. In Barred, Daniel S. Medwed gives us an urgent tour of the darkest corners of our judicial system, where persuasive evidence becomes trapped in a labyrinth of legal procedure. Underlying Medwed’s sharp legal analysis is a political question: Is this the country we want to be?” ―Maurice Chammah, author of Let the Lord Sort Them“A lucid and persuasive call for change.”―Publishers Weekly“Informative and poignant… [An] important addition to the literature on America’s addiction to incarceration.”―Kirkus“Eye-opening… Readers interested in criminal justice will find an elucidating look at the challenges and possibilities for the wrongfully convicted.”―Booklist
