Synopsis

There is a distinct lack of discussion pertaining to the lasting damage narcissistic parents inflict on their children, a shortfall so intense that some of the victims themselves don't recognise the harm done to them either, or accept the abuse as being their fault.
One of the saddest things is that most children or grown-up survivors never get help or relate their lifelong relationship troubles back to their real origins. They are often categorised by society as having only suffered emotional abuse at best. It is disappointing how lots of professionals and, in particular, physicians and counsellors, minimise the pain those who have lived through lasting emotional trauma are feeling and the impact it has on the patients' physical and psychological well-being. Don't judge and condemn what you don't understand.
By taking the reader through my own personal journey dealing with this kind of abuse, I aim to present how detrimental emotional abuse can be and try to bridge that above mentioned gap in general knowledge.

James Joyce - A Very Short...

James Joyce is one of the greatest writers in English. His first book, A Portrait of the Artist as A Young Man, laid down the template for the coming of age novel, while his collection of short stories, Dubliners, is of perennial interest. His great modern epic, Ulysses, took the city of Dublin for its setting and all human life for its subject, and its publication marked the beginning of the modern novel. Joyce's final work, Finnegans Wake, is an experiment in narrative and language. But if Joyce is a great writer he is also the most difficult writer in English.

This Very Short Introduction explores the work of this most influential yet complex writer, and analyzes how Joyce's difficulty grew out of his situation as an Irish writer unwilling to accept the traditions of his imperialist oppressor, and contemptuous of the cultural banality of the Gaelic revival. Joyce wanted to investigate and celebrate his own life, but this meant investigating and celebrating the drunks of Dublin's pubs and the prostitutes of Dublin's brothels. No subject was alien to him and he developed the naturalist project of recording all aspects of life with the symbolist project of finding significant correspondences in the most unlikely material. Throughout, Colin MacCabe interweaves Joyce's life and history with his books, and draws out their themes and connections.

    The Reconquista - Christian...

The Reconquista, meaning "reconquest" in Spanish, refers to the centuries-long struggle by Christian kingdoms to reclaim the Iberian Peninsula from Muslim rule. Its origins trace back to the early 8th century, when the Islamic Umayyad forces crossed the Strait of Gibraltar in 711 and swiftly conquered much of what is now Spain and Portugal. The defeat of the Visigothic King Roderic at the Battle of Guadalete marked the beginning of Muslim dominance in Iberia. Within a few years, nearly the entire peninsula had fallen under Muslim control, becoming part of the vast Umayyad Caliphate. This rapid conquest, however, did not erase the memory of Christian rule, especially in the remote and mountainous regions of the north.
In these isolated territories, remnants of the Visigothic nobility and clergy began to organize resistance. The Kingdom of Asturias, founded by Pelayo, a nobleman of likely Visigothic heritage, emerged as the first bastion of Christian defiance. According to tradition, Pelayo’s victory at the Battle of Covadonga in 722 symbolized divine favor and the beginning of a sacred mission to restore Christian rule. Though modest in scope, this victory held immense symbolic weight and inspired future generations to continue the struggle. Over time, Asturias would expand and give rise to other Christian polities such as León and Castile, each taking up the cause of the Reconquista in their own right.
The idea of reconquest was not purely political; it was deeply tied to religious identity. The fall of the Visigothic kingdom was viewed by many Christians as a divine punishment for past sins, but it also fostered a sense of purpose and redemption. Reclaiming lost territories became not just a matter of sovereignty but a spiritual imperative. The Christian leaders and their subjects saw themselves as the defenders of the true faith, fighting to restore a sacred order.

The Occupied City - How Israel...

East Jerusalem is more than a city; it is a battleground of maps, walls, and blueprints. In The Occupied City: How Israel Shapes Palestinian Life, readers are taken inside one of the world’s most contested urban landscapes, where every building permit, zoning law, and planning decision becomes a tool of power.
Drawing on years of research and first-hand interviews with Palestinian residents, urban planners, and human rights experts, this book exposes how Israeli urban planning policies restrict Palestinian access to housing, fracture communities, and rewrite the very geography of Jerusalem. It reveals how control is exercised not only through military presence but through bureaucratic procedures, economic pressures, and cultural erasure—quiet mechanisms that determine who gets to build, who is forced to leave, and whose story is allowed to endure.
At once rigorous and deeply human, The Occupied City gives voice to those living under the daily weight of planning systems designed to dispossess them. It uncovers the hidden architecture of occupation while also spotlighting acts of resilience, resistance, and visions for a more just future.
Essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the Israeli–Palestinian conflict beyond headlines, this book demonstrates how urban planning—often regarded as technical or neutral—is, in fact, one of the most powerful weapons in the struggle over land, rights, and survival.
