Beschreibung

In "The Woman with One Hand, and Mr. Ely's Engagement," Richard Marsh intricately weaves two compelling narratives that explore themes of identity, social alienation, and moral complexity in late-Victorian society. The literary style is marked by Marsh's rich descriptions and psychological depth, showcasing his ability to delve into the human psyche while capturing the era's intricate social fabric. The titular story of the woman with one hand confronts notions of disability and femininity, while "Mr. Ely's Engagement" offers a satirical take on societal norms and romantic entanglements, reflecting the tensions between personal desire and societal expectation. Richard Marsh, an enigmatic figure in the literary landscape of his time, was influenced by his experiences in the rapidly changing urban landscape of London, as well as the burgeoning interest in psychological and supernatural themes. His diverse background in publishing and writing allowed him to engage with various ideas that shaped his narratives, particularly those that questioned the stability of identity and the nature of reality. This collection is highly recommended for readers interested in the complexities of human experience during a transformative period in history. Marsh's ability to create multifaceted characters and explore societal critiques makes this book a compelling read, inviting reflection on issues that resonate even in today's context.

A dimly lit Victorian study. A mirror reflects two sides of the same man—one side dignified, clean-shaven, and composed (Dr. Jekyll), the other snarling, shadowy, and wild-eyed (Mr. Hyde).
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson is a psychological thriller and gothic masterpiece that explores the duality of human nature and the shadows that lurk beneath respectability. First published in 1886, this novella follows the story of the respectable Dr. Henry Jekyll, whose secret experiments unleash his dark alter ego—Mr. Edward Hyde—upon Victorian London.
As Hyde’s brutal and violent behavior spirals out of control, Jekyll must confront the terrifying consequences of his scientific ambition. Told through multiple perspectives, this eerie and atmospheric tale has remained a chilling allegory of repression, identity, and the human soul.
This full audiobook brings Stevenson’s gripping prose to life with haunting narration, immersing listeners in cobblestone alleyways, flickering gaslights, and the eerie fog of 19th-century London. A must-listen for fans of gothic fiction, classic horror, and literary suspense.

Full Circle Protection grew from being an operation run out of a beatdown truck to needing a fully functional office. Their ragtag crew of castaways are only a uniform away from seeming professional. And all that ugly that went bump in the night? It began to see that there are no easy meals in the land of Clev. This newfound order is put to the test, though, as a new kind of enemy emerges, launching an attack that isn’t motivated by old vendettas or orchestrated by some secret manipulator. A strange old man, "so old that no one can remember when he was young, and so taciturn that few know his real name," lives alone in an ancient house on Water Street in the town of Kingsport. Even among the locals, few know the details of the old man's life, but it is believed that he once captained East Indian clipper ships in his youth and accumulated great riches throughout his life. Those who had visited the property had seen bizarre collections of stones in the front yard and observed the old man carrying on conversations with mysterious bottles on his table, which make "certain definite vibrations as if in answer." Most locals take care to avoid the man and his house. Angelo Ricci, Joe Czanek and Manuel Silva, three robbers, learn about the old man's supposed hoard of treasure and resolve to take it. Ricci and Silva go inside to "interview" the old man about the treasure, while Czanek waits outside in the getaway car. After waiting impatiently for a long time, Czanek is startled by an outburst of horrific screaming from the house but assumes that his colleagues have been too rough with the old man during their interrogation. However, the gate of the house opens, revealing the old man "smiling hideously" at him. For the first time, Czanek takes note of the man's unsettling yellow eyes. The mutilated bodies of the three robbers are later found by the seaside, "horribly slashed as with many cutlasses, and horribly mangled as by the tread of many cruel boot-heels." The people of Kingsport talk about the discovery, as well as about the abandoned car and the screams heard in the night, but the old man shows no interest in their gossip.

We thought death was the end, turns out it’s just the prologue.
    RUE

Only problem is I’ve been saddled with supervision. Kane Deveraux is handsome, smug, and cold as a tombstone. So why does he make me feel something more powerful than death?
    KANE
As a reaper, I have helped crossover thousands of souls. And not one of them have touched mine…until Rue Chamberlain. She’s stubborn, reckless, and maddeningly radiant.
And for this centuries-old spirit, she’s a living woman that is absolutely off-limits. If I follow the rules, I will lose her. If I break them, I might lose everything.
Grim is a darkly romantic, wickedly funny tale of life, death, and a love that refuses to rest in peace.
