Habitual drug use in the United States is at least as old as the nation itself. Habit Forming traces the history of unregulated drug use and dependency before 1914, when the Harrison Narcotic Tax Act limited sales of opiates and cocaine under US law. Many Americans used opiates and other drugs medically and became addicted. Some tried Hasheesh Candy, injected morphine, or visited opium dens, but neither use nor addiction was linked to crime, due to the dearth of restrictive laws. After the Civil War, American presses published extensively about domestic addiction. Later in the nineteenth century, many used cocaine and heroin as medicine. As addiction became a major public health issue, commentators typically sympathized with white, middle-class drug users, while criticizing such use by poor or working-class people and people of color. When habituation was associated with middle-class morphine users, few advocated for restricted drug access. By the 1910s, as use was increasingly associated with poor young men, support for regulations increased. In outlawing users' access to habit-forming drugs at the national level, a public health problem became a larger legal and social problem, one with an enduring influence on American drug laws and their enforcement.

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice.
The Reflective Cosmos invites you on an extraordinary journey through space, life, and consciousness, revealing a bold new vision of the universe as a vast mirror of itself. What if space is not empty, but a dynamic medium shaped by pressure, reflection, and resonance? What if life and mind emerge not as accidents, but as natural expressions of this cosmic architecture?
Blending science, philosophy, and imagination, this groundbreaking audiobook explores questions at the frontier of human thought:
Is the universe infinite, or does it bend back on itself like a reflection?
Could pressure and waves in the cosmic medium explain dark matter, black holes, and the hidden energy of space?
How are life, evolution, and consciousness woven into the same reflective principles that guide galaxies and stars?
Might information, order, and mind itself arise from the logic of mirrors?
From the mechanics of space and time to the mysteries of the living mind, from the breath of black holes to the reflective horizon of infinity, The Reflective Cosmos offers a unified story of existence - where physics, biology, and consciousness converge.
This is not just a book about the universe - it is a mirror in which the universe comes to know itself.

A spellbinding exploration of the human capacity to imagine the future

Our ability to think about the future is one of the most powerful tools at our disposal. In The Invention of Tomorrow, cognitive scientists Thomas Suddendorf, Jonathan Redshaw, and Adam Bulley argue that its emergence transformed humans from unremarkable primates to creatures that hold the destiny of the planet in their hands.

Drawing on their own cutting-edge research, the authors break down the science of foresight, showing us where it comes from, how it works, and how it made our world. Journeying through biology, psychology, history, and culture, they show that thinking ahead is at the heart of human nature—even if we often get it terribly wrong. Incisive and expansive, The Invention of Tomorrow offers a fresh perspective on the human tale that shows how our species clawed its way to control the future.
