Synopsis

"SSL/TLS Technologies for Secure Communications""SSL/TLS Technologies for Secure Communications" is a comprehensive and meticulously structured exploration of the protocols and cryptographic techniques that underpin modern secure data transmission. Beginning with the foundational principles of cryptography as applied in SSL/TLS, the book delves deeply into both symmetric and asymmetric algorithms, key exchange mechanisms, hash functions, and secure random number generation, all mapped directly to their usage within SSL and TLS standards. Each chapter systematically unfolds the interplay of cryptographic primitives and protocol components, clarifying complex concepts such as key management, message authentication, and the architecture of secure communication channels.Expanding beyond theoretical underpinnings, the text provides an in-depth analysis of the SSL/TLS protocol suite, including the handshake and record protocols, cipher suite negotiation, and session management strategies that ensure confidentiality, integrity, and performance. It further explores certificate management and public key infrastructure (PKI), highlighting X.509 standards, lifecycle automation, and threats to certificate trust chains. Critical attention is given to protocol evolution—from early SSL iterations to the robust TLS 1.3 specification—shedding light on vulnerability remediation, backward compatibility, and the contributions of standardization bodies in maintaining the protocol’s resilience and interoperability.Addressing the ever-evolving threat landscape, the book investigates prominent attacks, implementation flaws, and operational best practices for secure deployment in diverse environments—from microservices and cloud-native architectures to IoT and post-quantum cryptography. Readers gain actionable guidance on secure configuration, performance tuning, incident response, and regulatory compliance, complemented by forward-looking perspectives on protocol innovation, privacy enhancement, and the strategic retirement of legacy technologies. "SSL/TLS Technologies for Secure Communications" equips security practitioners, architects, and technologists to navigate and master the complexities of building robust, future-proof secure communication systems.

HowExpert Guide to Honey Bees & Beekeeping is a great starter guide for those who are simply interested in honey bees or those who are interested in becoming beekeepers themselves. It describes the science of the honey bee itself, as well as the inner workings of each member and how they work together to survive.
The colony, as a whole, can be treated as its own organism because of how the honey bees work together to perform tasks as a social species. Beekeepers have been observing such behaviors for generations, and I would like to pass on the knowledge to others. The beekeeping portion of this guide provides a wealth of knowledge on how to start your own apiary.
Learn about all the equipment necessary for your operation, how to inspect your hives, what a beekeeper does throughout the year, a short guide to pests and diseases, bee-friendly plants, and how to extract honey and wax from your hives. All of this information can be found in this book. Just a warning, this hobby can cause one to become very passionate about one very small and fuzzy insect. It is not uncommon for a beekeeper to want to be constantly learning about honey bees.
    About the Author
Emily Helton was introduced to the science of honey bees and the world of beekeeping when she was 17 years old. Dr. Jamie Ellis offered her a summer job at the University of Florida Honey Bee Research and Extension Laboratory. Through her six years working at the lab, she grew to love learning everything she could about honey bees and moved on to teaching others as well. Emily spoke at schools, clubs, and conferences and assisted in planning educational events in hopes of reaching more people. Now living in California, Emily voluntarily teaches at the Honeybee Discovery Center in Orland, where she is also on the Educational Committee and Advisory Council.

The dazzling promise of stem cell medicine: does it work and will it save us? Two experts look at the hype

For decades, we've been anticipating the dawn of regenerative medicine. Again and again, we've been promised that stem cells will soon cure just about every ill imaginable. If not tomorrow, then the next day, or the day after that, and so on. We're still waiting.
This book is an antidote to hype and a salve to soothe the itch for stem-cell salvation. In it, Professor John Rasko, a leading physician-scientist, and writer-historian Carl Power take us on a wild historical tour of this scandal-prone field. They expose all the dirty little secrets that the hype merchants prefer to ignore - the blunders and setbacks, confusions and delusions, tricks and lies. You'll meet Alexis Carrel, who discovered how to cultivate cells in a test tube: celebrity surgeon, scientific genius and suspected Nazi sympathiser, he opened the field of modern cell science with an experiment so bogus it blocked the way forward for the next 50 years. You'll meet Don Thomas, who developed bone marrow transplantation - the first successful stem-cell therapy - but only after a miserable decade in which most of his patients died. Alongside true stem-cell pioneers, you'll meet charlatans who cooked their data and claimed fake cures - sometimes with fatal consequences.
Is there any good news? Which of the many promises of stem-cell research have been kept? And what of the future? Rasko and Power insist that we can only know where we're going if we have a sense of where we've been. Their study tears down the hype surrounding stem cells in order to reveal what's still worth hoping for.
