Synopsis

"Public Key Infrastructure Essentials""Public Key Infrastructure Essentials" offers a comprehensive and accessible guide through the foundational and advanced realms of PKI, a critical pillar of modern information security. Beginning with a historical perspective on cryptographic trust models, the book demystifies core concepts such as certificates, certificate authorities, and the mathematical foundations of asymmetric cryptography. Readers learn not only how PKI underpins authentication, confidentiality, and non-repudiation across distributed systems, but also gain insights into its global regulatory landscape and the interplay of various PKI actors. The text transitions seamlessly into deep, practical explorations of operational PKI, addressing the lifecycles of digital certificates, robust certificate authority frameworks, and the security mechanisms necessary to protect and manage cryptographic keys. Architectural models are presented for on-premises, cloud, and hybrid deployments, alongside guidance for high-availability design, business continuity, and policy governance. The book further provides actionable strategies for threat modeling, hardening PKI deployments, managing incidents, and navigating compliance within complex regulatory environments.Rounding out its extensive coverage, "Public Key Infrastructure Essentials" delves into the significant application domains of PKI—including web security, mobile and IoT integration, DevOps, and secure email—and addresses emerging challenges such as quantum resistance, blockchain-enabled identities, and privacy enhancement. A forward-looking final section examines future trends, automation and DevSecOps, and the convergence of identity and trust frameworks. This volume is an authoritative resource for security professionals, architects, and anyone responsible for safeguarding digital trust in today's interconnected world.

Mysteries of the Social Brain describes the scientific underpinnings of human behavior and values. Through the retelling of fascinating clinical stories of people with neurological conditions, this book explores the parts of the brain that allow humans to thrive as social and creative beings. The authors reveal the relevance of our brain circuits to our well‑being―and the well‑being of our societies―and show what happens when changes in our brain circuitry drive changes in empathy, altruism, moral beliefs, and creativity.

By integrating perspectives from neurology, psychology, psychiatry, and neuroscience, the stories in this book offer novel insights into the inner workings of the social brain and reveal groundbreaking findings from work in frontotemporal dementia, emotion, and the science of human values. This book showcases the discovery that creativity can emerge when there is decline in the brain’s language systems, a finding that highlights the robust, yet underappreciated connections between science and art. Listeners will learn about the biological basis of social behavior as well as simple steps that they can take to improve the functioning of their own social brains.

This book will captivate general listeners as well as clinicians and scientists who are interested in human social behavior, cognition, and emotion.

The current view of science is that Earth is around 4.6 billion years old, and the first 4 billion years of its development are known as the Precambrian period. For the first billion years or so, there was no life in Earth. Then the first single-celled life-forms, early bacteria and algae, began to emerge. It’s unclear where they came from or even if they originated on this planet at all, but this gradual development continued until around four billion years ago when suddenly (in geological terms) more complex forms of life began to emerge.
Scientists call this time of an explosion of new forms of life the Paleozoic Era, and it stretched from around 541 to 250 million years ago. In the oceans and then on land, new creatures and plants began to appear in bewildering variety, and by the end of this period, life on Earth had diversified into a myriad of complex forms that filled virtually every habitat and niche available in the seas and on the planet’s only continent, Pangea.
The Precambrian Period is divided into three eons: the Hadean, the Archaean, and the Proterozoic. One layer of carbon in rocks that date to the Archaean Eon, found on islands west of Greenland, seems to have fossilized tracks that may have been left by some form of organic life, but scientists simply are not certain. The oldest confirmed remains of life date from the same eon and were found in rocks in Western Australia, which were found to contain fossilized bacteria estimated to be 3.46 billion years old. It seems likely that there were thousands, perhaps even millions of forms of life in these early periods, and most seem to have been microscopic in size and very simple in developmental terms.

    The Amazingly Limited Power of...

Would you rather have the real thing of a fake substitute? In this quick listen with easy to follow reasoning, Michael Faeth has set out to change the narrative around artificial intelligence. This isn't an anti-A.I. tirade; in fact the author outlines some very good uses for it. However, we need a change of perspective on what role A.I. can legitimately play in society and what the limitations are.

We are being primed to put our faith entirely into generative A.I., but why? The way the companies that are promoting it as the consummate solution to our needs is disconcerting and concerning to say the least. It is easy to see how companies promoting the use of A.I. could have ulterior motives. The good news is that we have choices: we can stop supporting products and services we dislike; we can choose to live in a way that is best for our own creativity, productivity, and intellect. We still have plenty of time to re-think if and how we want to use A.I personally and in society as a whole.

So, should we stop marveling at the works of Mozart, Stephen Hawking, Ella Fitzgerald, Picasso, Mary Oliver, da Vinci, or so many others who have enhanced our lives using their natural intelligence? Does every endeavor we undertake need to be delivered instantaneously and without human contemplation? Take your time to wonder, think, daydream, and create, and may human intelligence and creativity never be replaced by something artificial.

This is the story of the Universe including life as we know it.It is a book of origins, prehistory and history … arranged in Three Testaments to honour the supreme achievements of the talented men and women who have been unravelling the mysteries of the cosmos, evolution, human antiquity and world history. Composed in biblical-prose format, the volume presents the facts of science and, as best as possible, relevant truths of history. The scientific facts rest on proven principles gained by observation, instrumentation, insight, intelligence, reason, and the application of physical laws and the formulation of harmonious, logical models. In defining the latest wisdom, they spell out the fundamentals of the physics of the wonders of the Universe?regarding which ever more exact details are improving all the time.It is testimony and eulogy, in praise of high scholarship and logic?the ultimate Enlightenment. Testament 1 tells the story of the Universe, the Stars, the Solar System and Planet Earth. Testament 2 examines the Origins of Life on Earth. The Third Testament treats the story of humanity as it proceeds to the present day?humans enriched with intelligence and a genetically-promising future. Yet, despite the successes, the story concludes with an Epilogue contemplating “How did it come about that Homo sapiens in the course of 160,000 years manage to get itself into the current mess?”?referring to the amalgam of authoritative religions, undemocratic governments, reckless overpopulation and irresponsible worldwide waste on land and ocean.
