Synopsis

"HoloViews in Scientific Data Visualization""HoloViews in Scientific Data Visualization" is an expertly crafted guide that navigates the evolving landscape of scientific data visualization with a focus on clarity, reproducibility, and modern Python tooling. Beginning with the foundational role of visualization in scientific computing, the book explores the complexities of handling multidimensional, heterogeneous data and the imperative goals of scientific visual analytics, including exploration, confirmation, and transparent communication. It provides a comprehensive survey of both traditional platforms and emerging Python-based solutions, situating HoloViews within the broader ecosystem and emphasizing the crucial balance between interactivity and reproducibility in research. The heart of the book dives into the architecture and declarative paradigms that distinguish HoloViews from imperative plotting libraries, detailing its object model of elements, overlays, and layouts. Readers are guided through the seamless integration of data from arrays and dataframes, flexible customization, and the extensibility afforded by various plotting backends. Practical chapters dissect the building blocks of visualization—curves, heatmaps, vector fields, linked multi-plot layouts, and annotation strategies—while advanced sections provide actionable techniques for real-time streaming, cross-filtering, performance optimization, and interactive scientific dashboards that scale from desktop to web deployments.Rich in multidisciplinary case studies and best practices, this volume equips scientists, analysts, and developers with the tools to construct robust, reproducible, and publication-quality visualizations across domains. From handling high-density arrays and geospatial datasets to enabling seamless collaboration through version control, CI/CD, and adherence to open science standards, "HoloViews in Scientific Data Visualization" serves as a definitive reference for leveraging HoloViews to unlock deeper insight and foster innovation at the frontier of computational research.

While modern technology has helped astronomers view the furthest reaches of the Solar System, it has also allowed scientists to start discovering planets orbiting distant stars. To make it easier to assess the relative mass and size of the new planets being discovered, scientists give these measurements as multiples of those properties for either Jupiter or Earth. In other words, if the planet is the same mass as Jupiter, then this measure would be listed as 1.0 MJ. If it were three times the mass of Earth, then it would be listed as 3.0 MEarth. The sizes of exoplanets are frequently given by expressing their radii as multiples of Jupiter’s radius or as multiples of Earth’s radius, RJ and REarth, respectively.
Of course, given the immense distances involved, detecting exoplanets has always been hard, even to this day. The variations of light that might be evidence of an exoplanet can be caused by other phenomena, and separating the false positives from the actual detections is part of the rigor required by modern planet hunters. For example, in July 1988, a Canadian team led by astronomers Bruce Campbell, Gordon Walker, and Stephenson Yang discovered persistent indications that a planet orbited the primary star in the Gamma Cephei system, 44.98 light-years (13.79 parsecs) from the Earth. Though the technique they used was successfully employed in many subsequent discoveries, the quality of their data was insufficient for others to verify as unequivocally the result of an extrasolar planet. For reasons of poor data quality, the claimed discovery of Gamma Cephei Ab was retracted in 1992.
The first confirmed discovery of an exoplanet involved a system that surprised most planet hunters. While most astronomers had been looking to find planets orbiting stars in the main sequence (between infancy and old age) or in their old age (giant phase), the first confirmed planets were found to orbit a dead star.

All Hell Breaking Loose is an eye-opening examination of climate change from the perspective of the U.S. military. The Pentagon, unsentimental and politically conservative, might not seem likely to be worried about climate change—still linked, for many people, with polar bears and coral reefs. Yet of all the major institutions in American society, none take climate change as seriously as the U.S. military. Both as participants in climate-triggered conflicts abroad, and as first responders to hurricanes and other disasters on American soil, the armed services are already confronting the impacts of global warming. The military now regards climate change as one of the top threats to American national security—and is busy developing strategies to cope with it.Drawing on previously obscure reports and government documents, renowned security expert Michael Klare shows that the U.S. military sees the climate threat as imperiling the country on several fronts at once. Droughts and food shortages are stoking conflicts in ethnically divided nations, with “climate refugees” producing worldwide havoc. Pandemics and other humanitarian disasters will increasingly require extensive military involvement. The melting Arctic is creating new seaways to defend. And rising seas threaten American cities and military bases themselves. While others still debate the causes of global warming, the Pentagon is intensely focused on its effects. Its response makes it clear that where it counts, the immense impact of climate change is not in doubt.

She told me she hadn't left her apartment in eleven days. The grocery delivery sat inside the front door. She had eaten what she could reach from her bed. Her therapist had called twice; she let it go to voicemail. Then her dog pressed its body against her side—and something shifted.
The Invisible Bond is the first book in The Invisible Series by Dr. Patrick Fisher—clinician, researcher, and founder of TheraPetic. Built on original doctoral research at Walden University, this book goes beyond clinical data to capture what it actually feels like to manage anxiety with an emotional support animal by your side.
Through in-depth qualitative interviews with adults living with clinically significant anxiety, Dr. Fisher documents the themes that emerged: presence, routine, grounding, connection, and the quiet ways an animal can hold space for a person who is struggling.
This book is for clinicians seeking to better serve clients who rely on ESAs. For individuals navigating anxiety with an animal companion. For policymakers making decisions about rights they may not fully understand. And for anyone who has ever been told that needing an animal is a weakness rather than a strategy of survival.
The science has not changed. Cortisol still drops. Oxytocin still releases. The autonomic nervous system still responds. This book documents why—and what it means for the future of mental health care.
The Invisible Series continues with The Invisible Disability, The Invisible Law, The Invisible Prison, The Invisible Identity, and The Invisible Data.

The principles of economics are the foundational concepts that explain how people, businesses, and governments manage scarce resources to satisfy unlimited wants. Most modern introductions, such as the one found in Gregory Mankiw's Principles of Economics, categorize these ideas into three main levels of analysis.
