Beschreibung

‘A delightful journey through gentler, happier times – Richard Hughes does for the cure of souls what James Herriot once did for the cure of sick animals’
Michael Poulton, Tony Award Nominee

Richard’s ordination to the sacred ministry is life changing. Though he is not entirely clear as to what that implies.

Vindicating the Tudor establishment of the Church of England, he serves his curacy at the magnificent Mold Parish Church, commissioned in the 1490s by Lady Margaret Beaufort to celebrate her son Henry’s accession to the English throne.

Richard is intrigued by the much older, less evidently regimented tradition of the Celtic saints whose names are commemorated throughout towns and villages of Wales. Nevertheless, Richard is also a curate in love, incurably, impossibly, passionately in love with the delightful Ann, a dedicated atheist and mathematician who is no less in love with him.

Let battle commence.

Life can be difficult. We all experience hurdles, obstacles and problems that get in the way and may limit our opportunities. But we can usually count on the steadfast and loving support of others. We get that comfort from our parents and pass it on through the generations. Sadly, some will not get that unconditional love and bond from their onset or their early years. Growing up as an orphan is to know you are different and, on some levels at least, alone. Surviving and thriving with this can damage a life or be used as fuel to achieve a whole, rich, and nurtured life.

In this volume our authors use this as their theme as they construct moving stories from bleak beginnings to lives with surprising outcomes.

An e-original short story from New York Times bestselling author J. A. Jance, featuring a sneak peek of the next J. P. Beaumont novel, Den of Iniquity—Twinkle Winkleman finds herself in a dangerous, life-threatening situation, and love forces her to confront the near-impossible.
A skilled mechanic and certified spitfire, Twinkle Winkleman is as hard as nails; she has to be with a name like hers. Twinkle learned everything there is to know about cars from her time in her daddy’s garage in Anchorage, and when her father dies, she gains ownership of the shop and Maude, her dad’s prized 1973 International Harvester Travelall.
Life has not been kind to Twinkle: she grew up without her mother, her daddy’s gone, her ex-husband betrayed her, and her son Tad was killed after a trip to Seattle to handle some “unfinished business.” Right now, the only things Twinkle truly cares for are her garage, Maude, and Cindy—her daughter-in-law and Tad’s widow.
One evening, Cindy and her friend, Leslie, have a girls’ night out at the local karaoke bar. Even though neither Twinkle nor Cindy are fans of Leslie’s boyfriend, James, Twinkle is happy to see her daughter-in-law enjoying her freedom and a night on the town. That is until she wakes up in the middle of the night and discovers Cindy hasn’t come home. Even more concerning, she isn’t picking up her phone.
What follows is a mother-in-law’s desperate and bold attempt to find her daughter-in-law—even if it means leading the dangerous search on her own, with a little help from J. P. Beaumont. As an Alaskan Winter rears its head, Twinkle is up against the clock: will she be able to save the person that means the most to her?

"The Stockbroker's Clerk" is one of the 56 short Sherlock Holmes stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It is the fourth of the twelve collected in The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes in most British editions of the canon, and third of eleven in most American ones (owing to the omission of the "scandalous" "Adventure of the Cardboard Box"). The story was first published in Strand Magazine in March 1893 and featured seven illustrations by Sidney Paget.
A young clerk, Hall Pycroft, consults Holmes with his suspicions concerning a company that has offered him a very well-paid job. Holmes, Watson and Pycroft travel by train to Birmingham, where the job is initially to be based, and Pycroft explains that he was recently made redundant from a stockbroking house. He eventually secured a new post with another group of stockbrokers, Mawson and Williams, in Lombard Street in the City. Before taking up the job, he was approached by Arthur Pinner, who offered him a managership with a newly established hardware distribution company, to be based in France.
