Beschreibung

In "Goa and the Blue Mountains; or, Six Months of Sick Leave," Richard Francis Sir Burton crafts a compelling narrative that intertwines travelog and personal reflection. Set against the lush landscapes of Goa and the scenic Blue Mountains, the book elucidates Burton's experiences during his recuperation from illness, blending rich, descriptive prose with keen observations on the local culture and environment. The work emerges from the Victorian tradition of exploratory literature, yet it stands out for its introspective tone, revealing the author's deeper contemplations on life, health, and the human experience amid the exotic locales of British India. Burton, a distinguished explorer, linguist, and translator, was deeply influenced by his travels across diverse cultures. His expertise in languages and understanding of various societies enabled him to capture the essence of his surroundings with an authentic voice. This personal journey during his sick leave reflects both his vulnerability and tenacity, making the narrative not just an exploration of place but also an exploration of the self. This book is a must-read for enthusiasts of travel literature and those interested in the intersections of health and exploration. Burton'Äôs eloquent prose and rich detail not only transport readers to the picturesque settings but also invite them to reflect on their own journeys of recovery and discovery.

Since the first 'Welch' sailor set foot on Japanese shores in the seventeenth century to the present-day presence of high-tech Japanese companies in the Valleys, Wales and Japan are two nations with deeply entwined roots.

Captured in this groundbreaking book is a chorus of modern-day Welsh migrants to Japan. There is Catharine who, in 1965, followed her Japanese husband to an 'out of kilter' house in the seaside town of Zushi; Jac, the 'capitalist ski bum', who guides tourists through the bear-infested wilds of snowy Hokkaidō, while on a volcanic island in the Seto Inland Sea, Simon clears jungle vines to develop his vegan farm.

There are also actors, writers, teachers, an ex-bouncer turned martial artist, a filmmaker, a games localiser, and many more. There are even Japanese fans who promote Welsh culture in their homeland. Together they form a polyphonic group portrait based on oral-history techniques, mixing travel writing, character study and reportage, while proving an ear for natural speech.

Fresh, engaging, with a strong sense of space and place, but above all, a knack for crafting a life story, this volume of documentary literature presents universal themes of work, adventure, reinvention and survival. Here are people discovering and negotiating the land, the life and the culture of Japan, and putting down 'transplantable roots'.

Egyptian symbolism is one of the most captivating aspects of ancient Egyptian culture, reflecting their deeply spiritual worldview and providing insight into their daily lives, religious practices, and understanding of the universe. From the majestic pyramids to the intricate hieroglyphs on temple walls, symbolism played a crucial role in conveying meanings that went beyond the literal. It was a tool to communicate with the gods, mark divine power, and ensure continuity in both life and the afterlife.
At the heart of Egyptian symbolism was the belief that the world was filled with hidden meanings and spiritual forces, each symbol carrying its own power. This belief was manifested in art, architecture, rituals, and even the everyday objects used by the ancient Egyptians. Symbols were not just representations; they were believed to hold an active force that could influence the material world and the spiritual realm. For example, the Ankh, a symbol resembling a cross with a loop at the top, represented life and was often used in funerary texts to ensure immortality for the deceased.
In Egyptian society, symbols were central to religious practices. The gods and goddesses, each represented by specific symbols and animal forms, embodied different aspects of life, death, and the cosmos. The sun god Ra, for instance, was depicted as a falcon, symbolizing both the sun’s power and the bird's dominance in the sky. The scarab beetle, a symbol of rebirth and protection, was commonly used in amulets and artifacts, signifying the cyclical nature of life and the hope for resurrection.

Chola Empire - Masters of the...

The Chola Empire, one of the longest-ruling dynasties in South Indian history, has origins shrouded in legend and antiquity. The early Cholas find mention in Tamil literature and ancient inscriptions, tracing their lineage back to mythical rulers. The Sangam period texts, such as the Pattinappalai and Puranaanuru, speak of the valor and governance of early Chola kings, who ruled over fertile lands along the Kaveri River. However, after a period of decline, the Cholas reemerged as a dominant force in the 9th century CE under the leadership of Vijayalaya Chola, the founder of the imperial Chola dynasty.
Vijayalaya Chola, initially a minor chieftain under the Pallavas, seized the opportunity to establish his rule in the fertile region of Thanjavur around 850 CE. This marked the resurgence of Chola power after centuries of obscurity. By defeating the Mutharaiyars, who controlled the region, Vijayalaya laid the foundation for an empire that would dominate South India for the next four centuries. Under his rule, the Cholas not only expanded their territories but also strengthened their political and military structures. He initiated temple-building activities, commissioning the construction of the temple of Nisumbhasudani in Thanjavur, a precursor to the grand temple-building tradition that would define the dynasty.
His successor, Aditya I, continued the expansion by defeating the Pallavas, thereby establishing the Cholas as a formidable power in the region. This victory marked a turning point, allowing the Cholas to assert their dominance over Tamil Nadu. Aditya I’s campaigns also extended into Kongu Nadu and the northern parts of Kerala, laying the groundwork for further expansion. His administrative policies ensured a stable governance system, which helped integrate the newly conquered regions into the Chola fold.
