Beschreibung

"A Trip to Scarborough" ingeniously merges Richard Brinsley Sheridan's "The Critic" and "Sir John Vanbrugh's The Relapse." Set in Scarborough, this comedic fusion follows the comical adventures of theater and society. Amid mistaken identities and amorous entanglements, characters journey for leisure, inciting uproarious chaos. Skillfully satirizing theater and societal norms, the play-within-a-play format offers witty commentary on human foibles, blending farce with astute critique.

Part of Deirdre Kinahan's trilogy of landmark plays commemorating seven years of warfare in Ireland, Outrage explores the true nature of women's roles in the Irish revolutionary wars, and in particular the Civil War in 1922.
Alice and Nell are sisters who play key roles in organising civic resistance and the propaganda war. They are fervent, they are funny, they are human and they – like everyone else in Ireland – become deeply conflicted as the country spins toward a shattering Civil War that splits the nation, and continues to haunt Irish politics, society and culture to this day.
Outrage was first staged as a touring production by Fishamble: The New Play Company, in partnership with Dublin Port Company and Meath County Council, in 2022.
Deirdre Kinahan's Raging trilogy tells powerful stories drawing on a tumultuous period of conflict in Irish history, from the 1916 Easter Rising to the Civil War which began in 1922. Each of the three plays – Wild Sky, Embargo and Outrage – was first performed a century after the event which it depicts, and they were commissioned and performed by companies including Fishamble: The New Play Company, Meath County Council Arts Office, Dublin Port Company and Iarnród Éireann.
Together, they challenge the historical narrative, mixing true-life testimonies with powerful drama to create a theatrical hurricane of empathy, action and truth.

What happens to identity when we're obsessed with self-surveillance and devalued words? Now that we've sold ourselves to ourselves, shuffling letters and sounds around to hide the pain, how do we represent the uncanny valley in which we've set up shop? In Cursed Objects, Jason Christie recoils in horror at the thoroughness of his self, then begins to write toward a new understanding brokered between all the things that define him and who he thinks he should be and interrogates how we reduce people to words, especially online, turning them into objects.

It happened in Japan is a 1923 romantic drama following a group of Western diplomats stationed in Japan during the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th Century. Focused on the main character Pearl, the book gives a great description of how life for a Westerner was in Japan during the period.
The book mixes silly and melodramatic love themes with serious undertones and events. It is a diamond in the rough, available for the first time as an audiobook

The highly acclaimed Russian classic of twentieth-century theatre about a wealthy family unable to let go of the past or face the future. The land’s fate lies in the hands of the family’s matriarch, Madame Ranevskaya, recently returned from five years in Paris where she wasted away much of her fortunes. Neither Ranevskaya nor anyone else in her household can fathom the gravity of the situation. But a merchant, the son of a former serf on the land, has an idea . . . Written in 1903, The Cherry Orchard premiered in Moscow in 1904. It was Chekhov’s last play before his death that same year. From the acclaimed author of The Balcony: “A play of epic range, of original and devastating theatrical effect…a tidal wave of total theater” (Jack Kroll, Newsweek).

Jean Genet was one of the world’s greatest contemporary dramatists, and his last play, The Screens, is his crowning achievement. It strikes a powerful, closing chord to the formidable theatrical work that began with Deathwatch and continued, with even bolder variations, in The Maids, The Balcony, and The Blacks.

A philosophical satire of colonization, military power, and morality itself, The Screens is an epic tale of despicable outcasts whose very hatefulness becomes a galvanizing force of rebellion during the Algerian War. The play’s cast of over fifty characters moves through seventeen scenes, the world of the living breaching the world of the dead by means of shifting the screens—the only scenery—in a brilliant tour de force of spectacle and drama.
