Synopsis

'The glow of my cigarette picks out a dark shape lying on the ground. I bend down to take a closer look. It's a dead sparrow. I wondered if I had become that bird, disoriented and lost.'
Young, handsome and contemptuous of his father's traditional ways, PK Malik leaves Bombay to start a new life in America. Stopping in Manchester to visit an old friend, he thinks he sees a business opportunity, and decides to stay on. Now fifty-five, PK has fallen out of love with life. His business is struggling and his wife Geeta is lonely, pining for the India she's left behind.
One day PK crosses the path of Esther, the wife of his business competitor, and they launch into an affair conducted in shabby hotel rooms, with the fear of discovery forever hanging in the air. Still Lives is a tightly woven, haunting work that pulls apart the threads of a family and plays with notions of identity.

Siddhartha is a novel by Hermann Hesse that deals with the spiritual journey of an Indian man named Siddhartha during the time of the Buddha.
The book, Hesse's ninth novel (1922), was written in German, in a simple, powerful, and lyrical style. It was published in the U.S. in 1951 and became influential during the 1960s. Hesse dedicated Siddhartha to Romain Rolland and Wilhelm Gundert.
The word Siddhartha derives from two words in the Sanskrit language, siddha (achieved) + artha (meaning or wealth). The two words together mean "he who has found meaning (of existence)" or "he who has attained his goals". The Buddha's name, before his renunciation, was Prince Siddhartha Gautama. He was Prince of Kapilvastu, Nepal. In this book, the Buddha is referred to as "Gotama".

The Fourth Book of Maccabees is a philosophical and theological treatise that explores the supremacy of reason over passion, particularly in the context of Jewish faith and martyrdom. While not part of the Hebrew Bible, it is included in some versions of the Septuagint, the Greek translation of the Old Testament.

Unlike the earlier Maccabees books, which focus on historical events, this text emphasizes the strength of faith and the power of rational thought in overcoming emotional and physical suffering. It uses the story of the martyrdom of Eleazar, a Jewish scribe, and the seven Maccabean brothers, who were tortured and killed by King Antiochus IV for refusing to abandon their religious practices, as its central narrative. Through these examples, Fourth Maccabees illustrates how devout adherence to God’s law can empower believers to resist even the most extreme forms of temptation and suffering, making it a profound reflection on virtue, faith, and moral courage.

A huntsman steals a princess and keeps her captive as his wife, but she escapes and returns to her father's castle beneath the mountain. The huntsman follows in hopes of reclaiming her, but there he is told that he must pass the seven tests of princehood to prove that he is worthy of having a princess as his wife.
These tests require him to demonstrate boldness, bravery, strength, endurance, compassion, understanding and virility. Only then will the king allow the huntsman to have the princess' hand, and failure to complete the tasks means his death. This an adult fairy tale romance with explicit sex scenes.
Authors note: I always enjoyed the swan maiden fairy tales but didn't like how they ended with the maiden getting away, so I wrote this story as a romance, combining the swan maiden theme with that of the enchanted princess stories.
