To what lengths would you go to save your children? Would you sacrifice your safety? Your sanity? Your life?Patricia fell madly in love with Rahman Abbar, scion of a wealthy Saudi Arabian family, and when he suggested they marry, it was the happiest day of her life. A smart, free-spirited girl who had attended Wellesley College, Patricia was not prepared for life as a Saudi woman-a life spent looking through curtains and veils at the world outside, a life that of necessity was curtailed and protected from the toxic masculinity of the culture, a life that, for an American girl used to sneaking out and hitchhiking, was dangerous and frightening and alien. She was not prepared to give up all her freedom: freedom to drive herself, to go where she wanted when she wanted, to read books and listen to music she wanted, even to give up making a career for herself. But shouldn't love be enough to overcome everything? After years in Jeddah, Patricia and Rahman moved to America, where Patricia gave birth to two children and started her own successful career. She thought that surely their family was complete, that now they would stay in America to raise their children in freedom and security. Then Rahman starts talking about leaving America and moving back into the jet-set lifestyle-regardless of Patricia's needs and wishes. After previous disappointments, Patricia is ready to divorce him and strike out on her own.She is not ready for her children to be kidnapped.

The question of who wrote the works attributed to William Shakespeare has intrigued scholars, historians, and literary enthusiasts for centuries. Despite being one of the most celebrated figures in the world of literature, Shakespeare’s true identity remains a subject of mystery. The sheer volume of his works, their profound depth, and the complexity of their themes have led many to wonder whether the man from Stratford-upon-Avon was truly the author of the plays and sonnets that bear his name. This uncertainty has given rise to one of the most enduring and controversial debates in literary history: the Shakespeare authorship question.

The core of this mystery lies in the limited biographical information available about Shakespeare’s life. Born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, Shakespeare’s early years remain largely undocumented, with no personal manuscripts or letters bearing his signature. The surviving records of his life mainly consist of legal documents, such as his marriage license, business transactions, and his will. While these historical artifacts confirm his existence and some of his professional endeavors, they provide little insight into his intellectual and literary development. For a figure of his stature, this absence of personal evidence is startling, leading some to question whether the “Stratford man” could have truly written the works attributed to him.

In the absence of definitive evidence, a number of alternative theories have emerged, suggesting that another writer, or group of writers, may have been responsible for Shakespeare’s remarkable body of work. These theories have ranged from the claim that the works were penned by an aristocrat such as Francis Bacon, to the suggestion that the true author was the playwright Christopher Marlowe, whose death in 1593 has been disputed by some.

What We Wished For: An Adoption Story shares a woman’s quest to build a loving family. It is a tale of courage, perseverance, and what remains when things don’t go as imagined. This memoir speaks to anyone who has ever struggled with a life-altering decision, one from which there is no turning back.

In this landmark collection, William T. Vollmann offers a kaleidoscopic retrospective of the visual artwork he has produced over four decades, with new commentary from Vollmann on his process, inspiration, and the many intersections with his writing.

The celebrated author of over twenty-five books (among them the National Book Award–winning novel Europe Central; the seven-volume Rising Up and Rising Down, based on Vollmann's career as a war correspondent; and the two-volume climate change investigation Carbon Ideologies), Vollmann's equally ambitious and prolific career as a photographer, printmaker, and painter reflects the artist’s deep interest in people existing on the margins, a profound empathy for his subjects, and the humility and generosity to meet them on their terms.

In Shadows of Love, Shadows of Loneliness, a series of essays commissioned especially for this book lays out Vollmann's views on what photographs can and should say, how he chooses what to represent (beauty, suffering, compassion, love, desire, ideology), thoughts on photographic consensuality, and any number of technical descriptions. Particularly useful for Vollmann fans and scholars are the cross-references between these artistic and photographic projects and his books.

Dr. Edwin Bancroft Henderson was the son of working-class parents born in slavery. Henderson attended Harvard University's Dudley Sargent School of Physical Training. There he met the leaders in the new field of physical education and recognized athletics—and basketball, especially—as a public health initiative and a way that young Blacks could gain college scholarships and debunk the idea of racial inferiority.

In The Grandfather of Black Basketball, Edwin Bancroft Henderson II—Dr. Henderson's grandson—provides unprecedented detail and fascinating insight into this influential figure in Black history. Henderson organized the first athletic league for Blacks, introduced basketball to Black people on a wide-scale, organized basis, and founded associations to train and organize Black officials and referees. He was instrumental in founding the first rural branch of the NAACP, advocated for school desegregation, and held executive board positions with multiple NAACP branches.

Overlooked for decades, Henderson was finally enshrined in the National Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013 as a contributor. The Grandfather of Black Basketball gives long-overdue recognition to a sports pioneer, civil rights activist, author, educator, and pragmatic humanitarian who fought his entire life to improve opportunities for youth through athletics.
