Synopsis

From the iconic science fiction author of Fahrenheit 451, a chilling dystopian short story that became a classic episode of TV’s Ray Bradbury Theater.  The Playground, first published in the hardcover edition of Bradbury’s legendary work Fahrenheit 451, tells the story of Charles Underhill, a widower who must protect his young son, Jim, from the horrors of the playground. Passing the playground on their daily walk brings Charles back the anguish of his own childhood—a nightmare of vulnerability and suffering. He will do anything to spare his sensitive son from the same torment.   Charles’s sister, Carol, who has moved in to help raise the young boy, feels differently. The playground, she believes, is preparation for life, and Jim will be more equipped to deal with the rigor and obligation of adult existence by facing it.   Paralyzed by his own fear and his sister’s invocation of reason, Charles learns of a way that Jim can be spared the playground. But it will come at a great cost . . . perhaps more than he can pay.

Let's explore this curious republic: Support Us at https://manifoldmedia.net/donate The Curious Republic of Gondour: As soon as I had learned to speak the language a little, I became greatly interested in the people and the system of government. The nation had initially tried universal suffrage, but the result was unsatisfactory. It seemed to deliver all power into the hands of the ignorant and non-tax-paying classes. A remedy was sought, and an ingenious idea emerged: not to destroy universal suffrage but to enlarge it selectively. An amendatory clause was inserted, allowing the suffrage to be enlarged in certain cases specified by statute. Property, character, and intellect wielded political influence for the first time, and the best men in the nation became candidates for parliament. Money, virtue, and intelligence united to shape the political landscape . Other Whimsical Sketches: The collection also includes various other sketches, each with its own twist of humor, satire, or imaginative exploration. From memories and reminiscences to royal compliments and wild interviews, Twain's wit shines through . The Curious Republic of Gondour and Other Whimsical Sketches invites readers to step into a world where absurdity meets astute observation. Whether you seek political commentary or flights of fancy, Twain's pen weaves a delightful tapestry of imagination and wit " Support Us at https://manifoldmedia.net/donate

From beloved Cuban science fiction author Yoss comes a bitingly funny space-opera homage to Raymond Chandler, about a positronic robot detective on the hunt for some extra-dangerous extraterrestrial criminals. On the intergalactic trading station William S. Burroughs, profit is king and aliens are the kingmakers. Earthlings have bowed to their superior power and weaponry, though the aliens—praying-mantis-like Grodos with pheromonal speech and gargantuan Collosaurs with a limited sense of humor—kindly allow them to do business through properly controlled channels. That’s where our hero comes in, name of Raymond. As part of the android police force, this positronic robot detective navigates both worlds, human and alien, keeping order and evaporating wrongdoers. But nothing in his centuries of experience prepares him for Makrow 34, a fugitive Cetian perp with psi powers. Meaning he can alter the shape of the Gaussian bell curve of statistical probability—making it rain indoors, say, or causing a would-be captor to shoot himself in the face. Raymond will need all his training—and all his careful study of Chandler’s hardbitten cops—to outmaneuver his quarry. As he did in his brilliantly funny and sharp science-fiction satires A Planet for Rent, Super Extra Grande, and Condomnauts, Yoss makes the familiar strange and the strange familiar in Red Dust, giving us an unforgettable half-human hero and a richly imagined universe where the bad guys are above the laws of physics.
