Synopsis

The story revolves around an army officer, Bob Hampton, and his redemption about how he was unjustly accused of a crime that he did not commit. It's a well written western novel with vivid characters and interesting storyline, full of suspense!
Except:
"It was not an uncommon tragedy of the West. If slightest chronicle of it survive, it must be discovered among the musty and nearly forgotten records of the Eighteenth Regiment of Infantry, yet it is extremely probable that even there the details were never written down. Sufficient if, following certain names on that long regimental roll, there should be duly entered those cabalistic symbols signifying to the initiated, "Killed in action." After all, that tells the story. In those old-time Indian days of continuous foray and skirmish such brief returns, concise and unheroic, were commonplace enough."

A reckoning with the persistence of evil in post–Civil War Atlanta
After leaving Atlanta in disgrace three years before, detective Thomas Canby is called back to the city on the eve of Atlanta’s 1881 International Cotton Exposition to partner with Atlanta’s first African American police officer, Cyrus Underwood. The case they’re assigned is chilling: a serial murderer who seems to be violently targeting Atlanta’s wealthiest black entrepreneurs. The killer’s method is both strange and unusually gruesome. On each victim’s mutilated body is inscribed a letter of the alphabet, beginning with “M.” The oligarchy of Atlanta’s most prominent white businessmen―the same men who ran Canby out of town, known more openly before Reconstruction as “the Ring”―is anxious to solve the murders before they lose the money they’ve invested in both the exposition and the city’s industrialization, even if resolution comes at the expense of justice.
After Canby’s arrival the murders become increasingly disturbing and unpredictable, and his interference threatens to send the investigation spinning off in the wrong direction. As the toll of innocent victims rises, Canby must face down enduring racism and his own prejudices, to see clearly the source of these bloody crimes. Meanwhile, if he can restore his reputation, he might win back the woman he loves.
With scrupulous attention to historical detail, Edgar Award finalist Matthew Guinn draws listeners into a vortex of tense, atmospheric storytelling, confronting the sins and fears of both old South and new.

George Robert Sims was born on the 2nd September 1847 in Kennington, London, the eldest of six children.
His initial forays into literature were humorous pieces in ‘Fun’ magazine and ‘The Referee’, but then he applied his skills and hard work to the plight of the poor and social reform. On these subjects he wrote seriously and extensively though perhaps his ballad ‘Christmas Day in the Workhouse’ is both his best remembered contribution and a scathing introduction of his views.
As well as a number of novels, and a short story collection featuring the female detective Dorcas Dene, he wrote poetry and over 30 plays. In the 1880’s he had the distinction of having 4 plays running simultaneously in London West End. These works brought him substantial revenues though gambling in later life shrank his fortune considerably.
Sims also bred bulldogs, played many sports and enjoyed a large circle of literary and artistic friends. In 1907 one of the causes he championed helped bring into being the Court of Criminal Appeal.
George R Sims died from liver cancer on the 4th September 1922 at his home in Regents Park, London. He was 75.

A little glue goes a long way. Or at least that’s what thirty-five-year-old single mother Lina Rivera hopes for when she finds herself smack dab in the middle of an undercover operation as a high school senior.
Best-selling young adult crime novelist Lina Rivera is strikingly beautiful and can’t even purchase a scratch ticket without being carded. With her twins Luciana and Max beginning their freshman year of high school in the fall, she has never felt closer to understanding her target demographic: teenagers. But when the reviews of her newest release fall short and negative feedback taunts her from every angle, it becomes clear that teenage life in 2024 is nothing like her high school experience back in 1999—and people are starting to notice.
Despite that, Lina is desperate to continue writing young adult books. So, when her ex-husband, Jon Cote, who is a private investigator, invites her to join an undercover operation at Emerson Academy, she can’t say no. She agrees to join “Operation Superglue” and is shocked beyond belief to discover that Jon has been posing as the school’s substitute art teacher for months and without any leads in a case of several missing teens.
Now an undercover high school senior, Lina learns that today’s society is worlds away from anything remotely familiar. And, with her ex-husband back in her life in more ways than one, Lina soon realizes that the choices she made in the past may not be as permanently stuck as she had once assumed.
