Synopsis

In "The Decadent: Being the Gospel of Inaction," Ralph Adams Cram presents a thought-provoking exploration of aestheticism and the philosophy of inaction, intricately woven into a narrative that critiques the bustling activity of contemporary life. Cram's literary style combines eloquent prose with vivid imagery, drawing from both Romantic and Gothic traditions to create a rich tapestry of contemplative thought. The work speaks to the turn of the 20th century, a time marked by rapid industrialization and cultural transformation, challenging the reader to reflect on the value of stillness and the art of living mindfully amidst chaos. Ralph Adams Cram, a prominent architect and writer, was deeply influenced by the artistic movements of his time and the encroachment of modernity on traditional values. His career straddled the realms of architecture and literature, with a philosophy deeply rooted in the belief that beauty and art were essential to the human experience. Cram's engagement with the aesthetic movement and his personal struggles with the implications of modernity provided the impetus for this contemplative work, illustrating his yearning for a return to a more meaningful existence. This book is highly recommended for readers interested in philosophical literature, aesthetics, and the critique of modernity. Cram's eloquent discourse invites readers to reconsider their relationship with the frenetic pace of life, offering a refreshing perspective that emphasizes the importance of introspection and navigating existence with purpose. "The Decadent" is not only a literary endeavor but also a profound meditation that resonates with a contemporary audience seeking solace in the quietude of thought.

A collection of essays by female horror writers exploring portrayals of diabolical mothers in both modern and classic horror films. The concept of motherhood, often idealized as the epitome of unconditional love and nurturing, has been twisted and perverted in various cinematic works to explore darker, more complex human dynamics. Led by Bram Stoker, Shirley Jackson Award, and two-time World Fantasy Award winning editor and acclaimed film professor Danel Olson, the essayists introduce listeners to traditional portrayals of mothers in film and literature, establishing a baseline for understanding how diabolical motherhood deviates from the norm. From a historical overview tracing the evolution of malevolent maternal figures in cinema, from early depictions of wicked stepmothers in fairy tales to the complex, to multifaceted monstrous matriarchs of contemporary films, these essays explore the psychological underpinnings of diabolical motherhood, drawing on author's personal experiences, anecdotes, and research to understand the motivations and mental states driving these characters in a wide range of horror films. The essays offer a deeper understanding of how cinema reflects and shapes our perceptions of motherhood, morality, and power. A must-listen for horror aficionados.

The 28-year period from 1933-1961, bracketed on one end by Hitler’s rise to power in Germany and on the other by the very height of the Cold War, was marked by a remarkably stable succession of American presidents. In fact, only three men held office in this period, and that predictability led to a general stability among government agencies. Conversely, the CIA had five different directors in its first 15 years, from 1946-1961, and then nine different directors in the next 20, with four of those directors serving less than a year. But of all the CIA’s directors, none wielded the immense influence or power of Allen Dulles, who, together with his brother, Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, became arguably the two most powerful people in the government after the president.
To this day, Dulles’ eight-year tenure in that office is the longest, and as one of the country’s leading experts in international law, intelligence, and spycraft, he became renowned for his unwavering anti-communist ideology and readiness to take decisive measures to counter what he perceived as a menace to American safety. As such, it would be Dulles who sanctioned many of the CIA’s most notorious operations, including the ousting of Iran's democratically elected government in 1953, spying and experimentation on American citizens, and the disastrous Bay of Pigs. That last episode cost him his job, though he continued to play a role in American political life after President John F. Kennedy forced him out of the CIA in 1961.
By then, however, Dulles had already had an outsized influence on the direction of the country, and to this day his legacy can be felt, even as his reputation continues to be a source of much debate.

Beginning with a jaw-dropping rumination on a centuries-old painting featuring a white man with a Black man's leg surgically attached (with the expired Black leg-donor in the foreground), contracts law scholar and celebrated journalist Patricia J. Williams uses the lens of the law to take on core questions of identity, ethics, and race.

With her trademark elegant prose and critical legal studies wisdom, Williams brings to bear a keen analytic eye and a lawyer's training to chapters exploring the ways we have legislated the ownership of everything from body parts to gene sequences—and the particular ways in which our laws in these areas isolate nonnormative looks, minority cultures, and out-of-the-box thinkers.

At the heart of "Wrongful Birth" is a lawsuit in which a white couple who use a sperm bank sue when their child "comes out Black." And "Hot Cheeto Girl" examines the way that algorithms give rise to new predictive categories of human assortment, layered with market-inflected cages of assigned destiny.

The Miracle of the Black Leg offers a brilliant meditation on the tricky place where law, science, ethics, and cultural slippage collide.
