Synopsis

Realism Theatre Elements explores the evolution of theatre into a mirror reflecting everyday life, dissecting the core components of theatrical realism and its modern impact. It examines how theatre shifted from dramatic spectacle to reflecting ordinary scenarios with psychological depth.

Realism arose from societal changes, prompting playwrights to employ naturalistic dialogue and character-driven narratives. The book delves into the historical context, dramatic techniques, and psychological dimensions of realism. It traces the movement's origins, its philosophical influences like scientific determinism, and its departure from romanticism and melodrama.

The book progresses logically, starting with historical context, then examining playwriting, directing, and acting, before finally exploring the psychological dimensions of characters and realism's legacy in contemporary theatre. This study uniquely emphasizes the practical application of realist techniques, providing detailed analyses of scenes and characters. It demonstrates how realism can create compelling performances, making it a valuable resource for students, actors, directors, and theatre enthusiasts alike.

As far as skirmishes go, Fort Pillow was a completely unremarkable fight. Before attacking, Forrest demanded the unconditional surrender of the Union garrison, a normal custom of his, and he warned the Union commanding officer that he would not be responsible for his soldiers’ actions if the warning went unheeded. What made Fort Pillow markedly different was that a sizable amount of the Union garrison defending the Fort was comprised of black soldiers, which particularly enraged Confederate soldiers whenever they encountered those they viewed as former slaves in the field. It is still unclear exactly how the fighting unfolded, but what is clear is that an unusually high percentage of Union soldiers were killed, and the Confederates were accused of massacring black soldiers after they had surrendered. Primary sources tell conflicting accounts of what happened at Battle of Fort Pillow, leaving scholars to piece together the battle and determine whether Confederate soldiers purposely shot Union soldiers after they had surrendered.
The mine that precipitated the Battle of the Crater during the Siege of Petersburg produced one of the most amazing scenes of the entire Civil War. The force of the explosion created a crater that was nearly 200 feet long, 100 feet wide, and 30 feet deep. Remnants of the crater can still be seen today. But through a mix of bad luck, fog of war, and incompetent leadership, the Union assault that followed the explosion was badly bungled. Instead of capturing Petersburg, the Battle of the Crater was a Union debacle that left more than 4,000 Union soldiers killed, wounded, or captured. The Confederates lost about 1,500, with nearly 300 of them being casualties of the initial explosion. The Battle of the Crater didn’t help the Confederates much in front of Petersburg, but it remains the most memorable and controversial battle of the entire siege.

Leah Myers may be the last member of the Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe in her family line, due to her tribe's strict blood quantum laws. In this unflinching and intimate memoir, Myers excavates the stories of four generations of women in order to leave a record of her family. Beginning with her great-grandmother, the last full-blooded Native member in their lineage, she connects each woman with her totem to construct her family's totem pole: protective Bear, defiant Salmon, compassionate Hummingbird, and perched on top, Raven.

As she pieces together their stories, Myers weaves in tribal folktales, the history of the Native genocide, and Native mythology. She tells the larger story of how, as she puts it, her "culture is being bleached out," offering sharp vignettes of her own life between White and Native worlds: her naïve childhood love for Pocahontas, her struggles with the Klallam language, the violence she faced at the hands of a close White friend as a teenager.

Crisp and powerful, Thinning Blood is at once a bold reclamation of one woman's identity and a searingly honest meditation on heritage, family, and what it means to belong.

Father Charles Coughlin was a controversial Canadian-American Catholic priest based in Michigan. Calling for monetary reforms, the nationalization of major industries and railroads, and protection of the rights of labor, Coughlin used weekly radio broadcasts to reach a mass audience of up to thirty million listeners during the 1930s. An early supporter of Franklin D. Roosevelt and his New Deal, Coughlin later became a harsh critic. Coughlin’s commentary also became more anti-semitic, and he supported some of the fascist policies of Hitler, Mussolini, and Hirohito. As a result, many American Catholic leaders, as well as the Vatican, wanted Coughlin silenced. After the outbreak of World War II in 1939, the Roosevelt administration finally forced the cancellation of his radio program and forbade the dissemination of his newspaper, Social Justice. This recording is from 1939.

Marriage, relationships, and interpersonal relationships have changed for black women, and it is apparent that many of them are becoming victims of domestic violence than ever before. Police stations and court dockets are replete with black men and women who have violently disagreed and have to undergo therapy to mend their violent misunderstandings. The main tragedy is that many back women and young girls are dying because of domestic violence. Young black girls who have not tasted the beautiful air of progress and success in life are dying as young black boys release their rage upon them without remorse. Why are there so many women being victims of violence in their communities? Some would say that black women themselves are responsible for the majority of the cases that leave them victims of violence. And if this is true, what has become of the black families that raise these young beautiful black women? In addition, this book expounds on real issues that carefully look at black women as victims of domestic violence and black women who are perpetrators of domestic violence.
