Beschreibung

Shadows on the Tide plunges you into Muros de la Costa, a mist-shrouded fishing village on Spain’s Atlantic shore, where the creak of wooden piers and the salt-laden air conceal a network of horrors. Seven-year-old Ioana Popescu vanishes on a routine errand for bread, and two disparate souls race against time to unearth the truth buried beneath decades of silence.

Marcos Varela, a former Guardia Civil detective haunted by a case that derailed his career, returns to the coast determined to atone for past failures. Alongside him is Clara Díaz, an intrepid local journalist desperate to illuminate the untold stories of her community. Their investigation is sparked by subtle clues—a single boot print with a diamond-grid sole, an anchor-shaped button, a stray seagull feather—and guided by the whispered counsel of Fermín, a retired fisherman who knows every hidden passage in the abandoned cannery.

As they delve into crumbling arcades of stone, moonlit tunnels beneath water-stained tanks, and the ramshackle shanty of a clandestine scrap-dealer, Marcos and Clara unearth a ring of child exploitation operating behind the scenes of the mussel harvest. Together, they orchestrate daring night raids: slipping through underground corridors, freeing terrified youngsters from makeshift cages, and outmaneuvering armed accomplices under the glare of a full moon.

But Shadows on the Tide is more than a gripping thriller. It confronts deep ethical questions: Should identities be concealed to protect victims, or unveiled to galvanize public outcry? Can a journalist’s duty to inform coexist with a detective’s vow of silence until the rescue is secure? Clara wrestles with her editor’s pressure for sensational headlines, while Marcos struggles to silence the echoes of orders that once cost lives.

Over ten atmospheric chapters—from the cozy warmth of the seaside bakery to the stark gloom of submerged holding cells—the novel weaves a tapestry of suspense, moral reckoning, and community resilience. When they finally expose Salvador “El Poncho” Ramos and his cohorts, the climax unfolds in a packed dockside press conference, radio helicopters overhead and national crews watching as truth overtakes fear.

In the poignant epilogue, Muros de la Costa reclaims its soul: children return to sunlight, grateful families rebuild their lives, and the village’s battered heart beats anew. A single sea-polished shell, gifted by Ioana to Clara, becomes a symbol of remembrance and hope—proof that the tides may wash away footprints, but also restore what was lost.

Shadows on the Tide is a tribute to courage, compassion, and the power of story—where every misty morning and every creaking board speaks to the light that emerges from even the deepest shadows.

A gripping novel about the assassination of Leon Trotsky in Mexico City in 1940In The Man Who Loved Dogs, Leonardo Padura brings a noir sensibility to one of the most fascinating and complex political narratives of the past hundred years: the assassination of Leon Trotsky by Ramón Mercader. The story revolves around Iván Cárdenas Maturell, who in his youth was the great hope of modern Cuban literature—until he dared to write a story that was deemed counterrevolutionary. When we meet him years later in Havana, Iván is a loser: a humbled and defeated man with a quiet, unremarkable life who earns his modest living as a proofreader at a veterinary magazine. One afternoon, he meets a mysterious foreigner in the company of two Russian wolfhounds. This is "the man who loved dogs," and as the pair grow closer, Iván begins to understand that his new friend is hiding a terrible secret.Moving seamlessly between Iván's life in Cuba, Ramón's early years in Spain and France, and Trotsky's long years of exile, The Man Who Loved Dogs is Padura's most ambitious and brilliantly executed novel yet. This is a story about political ideals tested and characters broken, a multilayered epic that effortlessly weaves together three different plot threads— Trotsky in exile, Ramón in pursuit, Iván in frustrated stasis—to bring emotional truth to historical fact.A novel whose reach is matched only by its astonishing successes on the page, The Man Who LovedDogs lays bare the human cost of abstract ideals and the insidious, corrosive effects of life under a repressive political regime.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is a collection of twelve short stories by Arthur Conan Doyle, featuring his fictional detective Sherlock Holmes. It was first published on 14 October 1892; the individual stories had been serialised in The Strand Magazine between July 1891 and June 1892. The stories are not in chronological order, and the only characters common to all twelve are Holmes and Dr. Watson. The stories are related in first-person narrative from Watson's point of view.
In general the stories in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes identify, and try to correct, social injustices. Holmes is portrayed as offering a new, fairer sense of justice. The stories were well received, and boosted the subscriptions figures of The Strand Magazine, prompting Doyle to be able to demand more money for his next set of stories. The first story, "A Scandal in Bohemia", includes the character of Irene Adler, who, despite being featured only within this one story by Doyle, is a prominent character in modern Sherlock Holmes adaptations, generally as a love interest for Holmes. Doyle included four of the twelve stories from this collection in his twelve favourite Sherlock Holmes stories, picking "The Adventure of the Speckled Band" as his overall favourite.
