"Against Nature" or "Against the Grain"—is an 1884 novel by the French writer Joris-Karl Huysmans. Let's explore this intriguing work: Plot Summary: The narrative revolves around a single character: Jean des Esseintes. He is an eccentric, reclusive, and ailing aesthete. As the last scion of an aristocratic family, Des Esseintes despises nineteenth-century bourgeois society. His goal is to retreat into an ideal artistic world of his own creation. The novel primarily consists of a catalogue of Des Esseintes's neurotic aesthetic tastes, musings on literature, painting, religion, and hyperaesthetic sensory experiences. "À rebours" delves into themes associated with the Symbolist aesthetic, breaking away from Naturalism and becoming the epitome of "Decadent" literature. It profoundly influenced works like Oscar Wilde's ""The Picture of Dorian Gray""1. Background: Huysmans, the author, underwent a significant shift in his writing style. His early works were Naturalist, depicting the drudgery of working-class life in Paris. However, he found this approach limiting and decided to apply the minutely documented realistic detail to a portrait of an exceptional individual: Jean des Esseintes. The character of Des Esseintes is partly based on Huysmans himself, sharing similar tastes but taken to greater extremes. Huysmans transformed this "wild and gloomy fantasy" into the novel ""À rebours""12. "Against Nature" invites readers into a world of decadence, introspection, and aesthetic obsession."

Conclude your journey into the eerie and the unexplained with the final volume of S. Baring-Gould's supernatural legacy. A Book of Ghosts: Volume 3 showcases the author at the peak of his narrative powers, weaving tales that are as much about the fragility of the human mind as they are about the restless spirits that haunt it. These stories represent the final bridge between the Victorian Gothic and the modern psychological thriller.

The Final Descent into the Unknown: In this concluding volume, Baring-Gould moves beyond the traditional "vengeful spirit" to explore more nuanced forms of haunting. Here, ghosts are often echoes of a life lived, impressions left upon the physical world that can be felt by those sensitive enough to listen. His mastery of pacing and "quiet dread" ensures that the terror comes not from the sudden appearance of a specter, but from the slow realization that one is never truly alone. Drawing on themes of isolation, memory, and the unseen, this collection solidifies Baring-Gould's place as a pioneer of the "subtle" supernatural.

For fans of the British ghost story tradition, this volume completes a vital trilogy. It is a necessary addition for any reader of classic horror, Gothic literature, and the history of supernatural fiction.

Montague Rhodes James is cited as perhaps the greatest English writer of ghost stories, an opinion few would disagree with.
James was born on 1st August 1862 at Goodnestone Parsonage in Kent, where his father was Curate but at age 3 the family went to live at Livermere, near Bury St Edmunds in East Anglia.
From early childhood he had a passion for mediaeval books and antiques. He was educated initially as a boarder at Temple Grove School in East Sheen, west London, before gaining a scholarship to Eton and thence Cambridge where he gained a double first, becoming a distinguished linguist and mediaevalist.
Before the Great War vacations were usually spent touring Europe absorbing cultures and references for his later writing.
A man of enormous knowledge it was said he timed his breakfast egg whilst he completed the Times crossword.
Many of his elegant yet terrifying tales were created by discarding the prevailing gothic cliches and placing his characters and narrative in a realistic setting. Thereby the stories gained atmosphere and menace on a grand scale and he was famed as the originator of the antiquarian ghost story.
Although story-telling and writing these 30 or so tales was a hobby, when published their effect transformed the genre and still chill the bones in our more modern times.
James was also a medievalist scholar and translator whose work remains highly respected. He was also Provost of Eton College between 1918 and 1936.
M R James died on 12th June 1936 at Eton in Buckinghamshire. He was 73.

A"POPULAR" fête with a philanthropic object had been arranged on the Feast of Epiphany in the provincial town of N——. They had selected a broad part of the river between the market and the bishop's palace, fenced it round with a rope, with fir-trees and with flags, and provided everything necessary for skating, sledging, and tobogganing. The festivity was organized on the grandest scale possible. The notices that were distributed were of huge size and promised a number of delights: skating, a military band, a lottery with no blank tickets, an electric sun, and so on. But the whole scheme almost came to nothing owing to the hard frost...
