Beschreibung

R. Austin Freeman's "The Case of Oscar Brodski" is a masterful work within the detective fiction genre that brilliantly utilize the scientific methods of forensic investigation, a hallmark of Freeman's literary style. Set against the backdrop of early 20th-century England, this narrative employs a tight, logical structure woven with meticulous detail, presenting a classic detective mystery that engages readers while exploring themes of justice, morality, and the fallibility of human perception. Freeman's use of the rationalist approach, particularly through the character of Dr. John Thorndyke—one of the first fictional detectives to utilize forensic science—elevates the narrative beyond mere entertainment to a commentary on the evolving methodologies of crime-solving in a rapidly modernizing society. R. Austin Freeman, a contemporary of Arthur Conan Doyle, was not only a prolific author but also a trained physician, which heavily influenced his portrayal of forensic science in his works. Freeman's background in medicine provided him with unique insights into the criminal mind and investigative processes, allowing him to imbue his stories with authenticity and a keen sense of realism. His experiences during the early 1900s, amidst burgeoning forensic advancements, inspired his innovative merging of scientific principles with fiction. "The Case of Oscar Brodski" is highly recommended for readers who appreciate a blend of intellectual rigor and thrilling narrative. Fans of Sherlock Holmes will find Thorndyke to be a worthy counterpart, embodying the analytical prowess and moral complexity that characterize the best detective literature. This novel is a notable achievement that showcases Freeman's deft storytelling and offers profound insights into the nature of crime and human behavior.

Isobel Violet Hunt was born on 28th September 1862 in Durham. As a young child her family moved to London and Hunt was brought up amongst the Pre-Raphaelite circle of artists.

As a writer she was comfortable and talented enough to write across several forms including short stories, novels, memoir, and biography. Her novels are excellent examples of New Woman fiction and help illustrate her activities fighting for and promoting better rights for women.

Although she remained unmarried she had lovers as notable as Somerset Maugham, H G Wells and Ford Maddox Ford, the latter whom she lived with for a number of years.

Her collections of supernatural short stories contain much of her best work and despite her considerable talents and literary output her reputation rests both on the literary salons she held at her home in Campden Hill, where the very best of literary society attended, and for her founding of the Women Writers' Suffrage League in 1908 and her participation in the founding of International PEN in 1921.

Violet Hunt died of pneumonia at her home in Campden Hill on 16th January 1942. She was 79 and is buried at Brookwood Cemetery.

In ‘The Night of More Weather’ Hunt once more brilliantly enters a character and describes a world that is compellingly real. But a very different turn of events is about to reveal itself.

With striking prose and inspired by real wrongful conviction cases, this layered takedown of the criminal justice system follows one woman’s quest for answers as the fate of two innocent men hangs in the balance.

Denver, 1992. Claudette Cooper, Moses King, and Dexter Diaz have been failed by the justice system. Claudette was sexually assaulted. Blinded by her perpetrator, she’s not able to identify him until she has a dream. As a result of that dream, Moses is wrongfully convicted. Dexter gave a false confession to murder after a grueling and unethical interrogation. Now, he faces a sentence of life without the possibility of parole.

Musician turned lawyer Liza Brown has seen firsthand the failings and shortcomings of the justice system. Her father, Langston Brown, also suffered the injustice of a wrongful conviction. As she's working at a nonprofit to free those who have been wrongfully imprisoned and helping Dexter’s case, Moses reaches out to her. Liza sees the cracks in the evidence against Moses, and when he confesses that he knew her father, she’s determined to help even though his case doesn't qualify for the young innocence project.

Recruiting her old friend Eli Stone to both men’s causes, Liza sets out to prove their innocence. But Eli is dealing with demons of his own. Corrupt cops are targeting the black residents of Denver, and when his nephew is beaten by the cops, Eli doubles down on his efforts to expose them.

Frustrated, Liza turns to Moses’s accuser, Claudette, for help. But Claudette is hiding a dark secret, and as political tensions in Five Points rise, the city of Denver erupts in protests and riots. In the aftermath of injustice, destruction, and desperation, will hope
    persevere?
