Beschreibung

MODERN LIFE IS COMPLEX. WHY? IT’S… COMPLICATED.

Over-the-top book analyzing the complexity that caused the Meaning Crisis. It also explores how people focus their attention in a world overwhelmed by superficial meaning and complexity. Fittingly, the book is made of scattershot essays.

First, the book explains how the world became more complex.

Second, it explains how we simplify things to deal with that complexity.

Third, it showcases how those simplifications end up making the world more complex and making it harder to assign responsibility. In short, interpolation inhibits investigation. By the time you figure out what someone meant, they are no longer in the room. That makes dialectic solutions quite difficult—if we can’t agree on rough definitions and basic facts.

The book also introduces a new psychological framework for satisfaction called The Fulfillment Games, based on a see-saw dynamic between control & release.

A data-rich examination of the US Supreme Court’s unprecedented detachment from the democratic processes that buttress its legitimacy.
Today’s Supreme Court is unlike any other in American history. This is not just because of its jurisprudence but also because the current Court has a tenuous relationship with the democratic processes that help establish its authority. Historically, this “democracy gap” was not nearly as severe as it is today. Simply put, past Supreme Courts were constructed in a fashion far more in line with the promise of democracy—that the people decide and the majority rules.
Drawing on historical and contemporary data alongside a deep knowledge of court battles during presidencies ranging from FDR to Donald Trump, Kevin J. McMahon charts the developments that brought us here. McMahon offers insight into the altered politics of nominating and confirming justices, the shifting pool of Supreme Court hopefuls, and the increased salience of the Court in elections. A Supreme Court Unlike Any Other is an eye-opening account of today’s Court within the context of US history and the broader structure of contemporary politics.

Urban design is the process of shaping the physical features of cities, towns, and villages. It is a discipline that integrates various elements such as architecture, planning, landscaping, and sociology to create functional, aesthetically pleasing, and sustainable urban spaces. As cities continue to grow and evolve, urban design becomes increasingly important in ensuring that urban areas meet the needs of both current and future generations. This chapter introduces the concept of urban design, its historical development, and its significant role in modern cities.
The history of urban design can be traced back to ancient civilizations where urban planning was guided by principles of geometry, religion, and governance. The layout of cities such as Ancient Rome and Greek cities was often designed with grand structures, forums, and public spaces to reflect social hierarchies and civic values. Over time, as cities grew larger and more complex, the role of urban design evolved. In the modern era, the Industrial Revolution brought about rapid urbanization, with a focus on accommodating large populations and facilitating economic growth. However, this period also led to overcrowded, unsanitary conditions that highlighted the need for better planning and design to improve quality of life.
Urban design today is centered around creating environments that are not only functional but also enhance the well-being of their inhabitants. It involves a multidisciplinary approach that considers various factors such as traffic flow, pedestrian access, environmental sustainability, and social equity. The goals of urban design are to create places that are safe, accessible, inclusive, and beautiful. This requires careful consideration of the built environment, including buildings, streets, public spaces, and infrastructure, as well as the natural environment, such as green spaces, waterways, and ecosystems.
