Synopsis

Plato's "The Republic" stands as a monumental text in Western philosophy and political theory, offering an intricate dialogue that explores the nature of justice, the ideal state, and the role of the individual within society. Written in the form of a Socratic dialogue, the work employs a rich literary style characterized by allegorical narratives, dialectical reasoning, and vivid imagery, such as the famous Allegory of the Cave. Set against the backdrop of ancient Athens, the text not only reflects the political turbulence of Plato's time but also serves as a foundational inquiry into ethical governance and the quest for truth. Plato (circa 427-347 BCE), a student of Socrates and a teacher of Aristotle, was profoundly influenced by the political dynamics of his era, particularly the execution of Socrates, which ignited his quest for a just society. His philosophical pursuits led him to establish the Academy in Athens, a precursor to modern educational institutions, where he nurtured intellectual inquiry and dialogue. "The Republic" emerges from this context, intertwining philosophical exploration with a practical desire to reform society through reasoned governance. For anyone seeking to understand the intricacies of justice, political theory, and ethical philosophy, "The Republic" is indispensable. Its relevance transcends time, offering profound insights into contemporary issues of governance and morality. Engage with this seminal work to appreciate its enduring influence on both philosophical thought and societal structures.

"One of the penalties of an ecological education," wrote Aldo Leopold, "is that one lives alone in a world of wounds." As climate change and other environmental degradations become more evident, experts predict that an increasing number of people will suffer emotional and psychological distress as a result. Many are feeling these effects already. In the pages of Solastalgia, they will find a source of companionship, inspiration, and advice.

The concept of solastalgia comes from the Australian philosopher Glenn Albrecht, who describes it as "the homesickness we feel while still at home." It’s the pain and longing we feel as we realize the world immediately around us is changing, with our love for that world serving as a catalyst for action on its behalf.

This powerful anthology brings together thirty-four writers—educators, journalists, poets, and scientists—to share their emotions in the face of environmental crisis. They share their solastalgia, their beloved places, their vulnerability, their stories, their vision of what we can create.

Be encouraged! You're already "doing it right" just by doing it.

    · a must-have resource for parents who homeschool or who want to start
    · from the founder of the 1000 Hours Outside Movement
    · equips parents with the confidence and tools they need to give their children the education they dream of and deserve

During the past five years, homeschooling rates have been on the rise and show no signs of slowing. But many parents lack confidence, questioning whether they are doing it right (or whether they should take the plunge at all). With so many voices offering conflicting advice, it's hard to know where to start and where to go from there.

A homeschooling mother of five and founder of 1000 Hours Outside, Ginny Yurich draws from her years of experience and research, as well as her master's degree in education from the University of Michigan, to encourage and equip parents who want to give homeschooling a try or want to improve their experience.

Starting from the standpoint of "you're doing it right" instead of "you're doing it wrong," Ginny helps parents understand that just by choosing to homeschool they are
    · learning through living
    · allowing for individual timelines
    · leaving space for boredom
    · providing multiage experiences
    · teaching self-reliance
    · offering freedom
    · slowing down
    · and more

If you've been on the fence about homeschooling or wondering if you're doing it all wrong, let Ginny encourage you in all you've already accomplished and equip you for even greater things ahead.

All living beings want to be eternally fulfilled and happy, without misery, without suffering. All of our struggles and all of our desires are to become fulfilled, it doesn't matter if we are fat or fit, poor or rich, black or white, this country or that country everybody across the board wants to be limitless, feel fulfilled, feel lasting happiness without any misery.
According to the ancient Rishis, the true source of happiness lies within you. Even though many people, especially spiritual seekers, intuitively understand that the true source of happiness is within, their day-to-day behaviour doesn't seem to reflect this understanding at all. Because there is some confusion about this fact, a strong conviction that happiness is within is missing. The experience of fullness is missing. The path of self-inquiry is a method of Jnana yoga the Yoga of Knowledge. It is an inquiry into, 'Who or what am I?' This is said to be the direct path to overcoming all the suffering and finding lasting fulfilment. Made famous by the great 20th-century saint, Sri Ramana Maharshi, the origin of this is in the ancient Indian philosophical texts Upanishads.
Unless we know what or who we are, how can we know what we truly seek? According to the yoga of knowledge, the root cause of all our suffering is due to our mistaken conception of ourselves, So, it's not due to the problems in the world. It's not due to financial hardship. It's not due to relationship problems. It's not even due to physical or mental problems. It's due to a wrong idea. It's due to ignorance of our true nature. We know we exist, but what we are is not very clear to us. And to discover what we truly are is the goal of the yoga of knowledge, and self-inquiry is the method. This path is an inquiry into oneself and not getting caught in the humdrum of existence, which is too noisy. Listening to the music of the true self.
