Synopsis

Afrikaans vocabulary book + Afrikaans dictionaryThis Afrikaans vocabulary book contains more than 3000 words and phrases which are grouped by topic to make it easier for you to pick what to learn first. On top of that, the index in the second half of the book provides you with a basic Afrikaans-English as well as English-Afrikaans dictionary which makes this a great resource for learners of all levels.

What you can expect from this book:This Afrikaans learning resource is a combination of Afrikaans vocabulary book and a two-way basic Afrikaans dictionary:Part 1 - Topic based Afrikaans vocabulary book: This is the main part of the book and represents a list of chapters each containing Afrikaans vocabularies for a certain topic. The Afrikaans vocabularies in the chapters are unsorted on purpose to separate remembering them from a defined alphabetical order. You can start at any chapter and dive directly into the topics that interest you the most.Part 2 - Basic English-Afrikaans dictionary: The index in the second half of the book can be used as a basic Afrikaans dictionary to look up words you have learned but can't remember or learn new words you need.Part 3 - Basic Afrikaans-English dictionary: Easy to use and with just the right amount of words, this third part finishes off with a second index that allows you to look for Afrikaans words and directly find the English translation

How to use this Afrikaans vocabulary book:Not sure where to start? We suggest you first work your way through the verbs, adjectives and phrases chapters in part one of the book. This will give you a great base for further studying and already enough vocabulary for basic communication. The Afrikaans dictionaries in part two and three can be used whenever needed to look up words you hear on the street, English words you want to know the Afrikaans translation for or simply to learn some new words.

Some final thoughts:Vocabulary books have been around for centuries and as with so many things that have been around for some time, they are not very fashionable and a bit boring, but they usually work very well. Together with the basic Afrikaans dictionary parts, this vocabulary book is a great resource to support you throughout the process of learning Afrikaans and comes in particularly handy at times when there is no internet to look up words and phrases.

    The In-Group Bias - Favoring...

In-group bias is a psychological phenomenon where individuals favor members of their own group over those belonging to other groups. This bias is rooted in the human tendency to classify people into various social categories, such as race, religion, nationality, or even less obvious distinctions like political affiliation or sports team loyalty. Once these distinctions are made, individuals typically develop a sense of belonging and loyalty to their own group—the "in-group"—while viewing outsiders, or "out-group" members, as different or inferior.
At its core, in-group bias serves a functional purpose in social behavior. Evolutionarily, humans have relied on social groups for survival, and belonging to a cohesive group provided benefits such as shared resources, protection, and mutual support. However, as societies evolved and became more complex, these group dynamics also gave rise to preferential treatment of those within the same group. This is not limited to obvious groups like tribes or clans but can extend to any group with which an individual identifies. Whether through shared beliefs, common goals, or even simple social interactions, in-group bias manifests in everyday life, influencing decisions, relationships, and behaviors.
In-group bias is a key concept in social psychology because it highlights how much of human behavior is shaped by the need for social belonging. This bias leads to favoritism in various aspects of life, from workplace promotions and academic opportunities to political support and even everyday social interactions. The impact of in-group bias can be subtle, such as favoring a colleague over an outsider for a minor task, or more overt, such as discrimination against individuals from a different ethnic background.

    The Just-World Hypothesis -...

The Just-World Hypothesis is a psychological concept that suggests people have a deep-seated belief that the world is inherently fair, where individuals get what they deserve. This belief leads people to assume that good things happen to good people, and bad things happen to bad people. It is a cognitive bias that serves as a mechanism for reducing feelings of anxiety or uncertainty about the randomness and chaos of the world. This belief in a just world helps individuals to feel more in control of their lives and less vulnerable to the uncertainties of the world around them.
The hypothesis was first proposed by psychologist Melvin Lerner in the 1960s, and it has since been widely studied in the fields of psychology and sociology. Lerner’s research showed that people often justify the suffering of others by believing that those who experience hardship or injustice must have somehow deserved it. For example, when people see others suffering, they may reason that the victims must have done something to bring the suffering upon themselves, whether through their actions, choices, or inherent characteristics. This allows people to maintain their belief in a just world, as it provides a sense of order and predictability in what might otherwise seem to be a random and unfair world.
One of the primary psychological functions of the Just-World Hypothesis is to reduce feelings of powerlessness. When individuals can attribute suffering to a victim's behavior or actions, they can distance themselves from the fear of experiencing similar fates. This belief offers a form of psychological protection, assuring people that they can avoid misfortune by adhering to social norms, behaving morally, and making the right choices. As a result, individuals may experience less anxiety about the unpredictability of life, as they can convince themselves that misfortune is not random, but rather a consequence of personal shortcomings or wrongdoings.
