Synopsis

Crocodile Man Kills American Researcher in Central Africa. Kael Husker stumbles over this National Enquirer-like headline in a week-old edition of his local Southeast Alaskan newspaper. The dead researcher had once been a friend of his, and soon after reading of Molly's unusual death at the hands of a Central African sorcerer, Kael is haunted by vivid visions of her reaching out for his help. He leaves his live-aboard boat and unemployment behind to journey to the Central African Republic to find out what really happened to his friend. In a faraway place that resembles an insane asylum run by the patients, Kael searches for the truth and to maybe find a little redemption. What he discovers is a scheme so twisted, he needs Molly's help to solve it.

“Ariel Leve is the love child of David Sedaris and Fran Leibowitz. An original and funny voice…. Insightful and sharp.” — Joan Rivers “Ariel Leve is brilliant and funny and the only other person I know without an oven. Buy this book and keep it close.” — Bill Nighy “Funny, smart, delightfully cranky”(AJ Jacobs) Ariel Leve’s Sunday Times Magazine (London) column “Cassandra” moves to book form. It Could Be Worse, You Could Be Me offers a humorously bleak perspective on life’s potential to turn out badly… and Ariel’s innate ability to put the black cloud into the silver lining. This is a book for schadenfreude aficionados; for readers who identify with Cassandra’s slogan, “worrying is my yoga”; and for fans of Seinfeld, Ugly Betty, Sex & the City, Curb Your Enthusiasm, David Sedaris, Woody Allen, and New Yorker cartoons.

A comical crime caper about three stoners with a plan: “By turns funny, sad, and insightful” (Booklist).   In a dying Pennsylvania coal town, three friends are looking for a way out. Mitch is a rebellious malcontent whose bad attitude gets him fired from a chain big box store. Doug can identify any pill by sight and any eighties rock song by the first three notes, but doesn’t understand credit scores. Kevin got married and had a kid too soon and is now on parole after serving jail time for growing marijuana.   The three of them dabble in petty crime and believe they have a talent for it. They start by stealing a high-definition TV. Then they set their sights on bigger scores. But things are about to get out of hand . . .   “An honest and humorous romp through lower middle-class frustration.” —Publishers Weekly

Suburban absurdity meets good old American despair in this acclaimed novel by “the funniest serious writer to be found on either side of the Atlantic” (Kingsley Amis).

Harking from the golden age of fiction set in American suburbia—the school of John Updike and Cheever—this work from the great American humorist Peter De Vries looks with laughter upon its lawns, its cocktails, and its slightly unreal feeling of comfort. A manic epic, Reuben, Reuben is really three books in one, tied together by a 1950s suburban Connecticut setting and hyper-literate cast of characters.

A corruptible chicken farmer fearful for the fate of his beloved town, a womanizing poet from Wales (Dylan Thomas in disguise), and a hapless British poet-cum-actor-and-agent all take turns as narrator, revealing different, even conflicting views. But alcoholism, sexism, small-mindedness, and calamity challenge the high spirits of De Vries’s well-read suburbanites. Noted as much for his verbal fluidity and wordplay as for his ability to see humor through pain, De Vries will delight both new readers and old in this uproarious modern masterpiece.
