Beschreibung

In "Personal Memoirs of P. H. Sheridan (Illustrated Edition)," the author chronicles his experiences during the American Civil War, offering an intimate glimpse into the strategies, battles, and leadership that defined his military career. Sheridan's narrative style is marked by a straightforward yet eloquent prose, interspersed with vivid descriptions that bring to life the chaos and valor of wartime. The memoirs not only recount his tactical maneuvers but also reflect the intense personal convictions that guided him in moments of crisis, situating him within the broader context of 19th-century American military history. Philip Henry Sheridan, who emerged as a prominent Union general, wrote these memoirs as a means of preserving the legacy of his service and the sacrifices of his comrades. Born in 1831 and raised in a military family, Sheridan's experiences as a soldier in the Mexican-American War informed his strategic mindset and leadership style, ultimately enriching the accounts found in this work. His commitment to honor and integrity shines through the text, providing readers with insight into his character as well as his formidable military acumen. This illustrated edition is highly recommended for historians, military enthusiasts, and casual readers alike, as it offers not only a detailed account of the Civil War but also a personal narrative that attests to the resilience of the human spirit. Sheridan's reflections on duty, courage, and camaraderie make these memoirs a compelling read that resonates with themes of leadership and sacrifice that are timeless.

A journalist and folklorist explores the truths that underlie the stories we imagine—and reveals the magic in the everyday.
“I’ve always felt that the term fairy tale doesn’t quite capture the essence of these stories,” writes Emily Urquhart. “I prefer the term wonder tale, which is Irish in origin, for its suggestion of awe coupled with narrative. In a way, this is most of our stories.” In this startlingly original essay collection, Urquhart reveals the truths that underlie our imaginings: what we see in our heads when we read, how the sight of a ghost can heal, how the entrance to the underworld can be glimpsed in an oil painting or a winter storm—or the onset of a loved one’s dementia. In essays on death and dying, pregnancy and prenatal genetics, radioactivity, chimeras, cottagers, and plague, Ordinary Wonder Tales reveals the essential truth: if you let yourself look closely, there is magic in the everyday.

From his earliest experiences in Air Force radio to his third act as a crime-solving doctor on television and beyond, Dick Van Dyke has been delivering steady comedic and dramatic performances for more than seven decades.
An actor, producer and writer, Van Dyke has been a recognizable name for generations, thanks to the naming conventions of the early days of television, wherein a lead actor’s name would be used as the title of the series. At just 36, fresh from Bye Bye Birdie on Broadway, Dick Van Dyke carved out an enduring place in television with The Dick Van Dyke Show, alongside another soon-to-be small-screen legend with three names: Mary Tyler Moore.
By 1964, after being chosen by Walt Disney for a starring role in the film adaptation for Mary Poppins, Van Dyke danced his way into the hearts of Americans of all ages. Since those early roles as Albert J. Peterson, Rob Petrie and Bert the Chimney Sweep, Van Dyke has never gotten too far away from a microphone, camera or spotlight and his storied career continues.
As one of few remaining American actors still working in their 90s (alongside Angela Lansbury, Betty White, and Norman Lloyd), Van Dyke will seemingly never run out of roles. Nor is he running out of charm. Dick Van Dyke continues to delight audiences today. Recent appearances include a lively dance number during the climax of 2018’s Mary Poppins Returns, voicing a character in Showtime’s short-lived series Kidding in 2020 and accepting the tributes colleagues and acolytes bestowed on him as a recipient of the 43rd Kennedy Center Honors in 2021.

    Day Dream Believers
On 1st February 1963, Eileen and her family migrated from England to Australia. Leaving behind a close knit family and many treasured memories. They sailed on a ship to a land of blue skies, sunshine and vast horizons.
In `Day Dream Believers’ we follow Eileen and her families journey from the migrant town of Elizabeth West to the top end of Australia. Eileen comes from an Irish, Catholic background. Their family life in Elizabeth West in Adelaide is described in loving detail. It’s the era of the hoola hoop, the yo-yo, skipping ropes, marbles, and go-karts.
    Her Dad would say,
‘The Irish are all born to wonder, they are poets and dreamers……..’
Forever searching for a better life and a place to belong, they leave Elizabeth West to live in Darwin.
‘The breeze made its way through the louvres, but inside the house the air was still and warm. I could hear the clicking sound of a gecko and watched as it scurried up along the wall. The streetlight made patterns on the louvres. I could hear a few voices, the stragglers, keeping their beers company as the night drifted by.’
We see the family surrounded by the culture of the time, pop songs, fashions, TV shows, and eventually Germaine Greer who ‘invited me to “taste my own menstrual blood.” It took guts, but when I did, I tasted power. It was not a burden.
And now, with blood dripping from my fingers, I smear the words:
    “You cannot defeat me.” ’
The 1970`s was the dawning of a new era, where the collective voices of many stood in defiance against the social norms of the day.
Eileen`s thoughtfully crafted memoir with it`s poignant insights of family life, simmering in the background of these ever changing turbulent times.
