Synopsis

The popular music of the 1980s had its own unique sound. Shaped by breathtaking developments in studio recording equipment and techniques, from digital processing to sampling, the music that is still enjoyed today would not be the same without it. This book tells the story of how one such young engineer/producer navigated his way through this exciting and pivotal period in music history. He did this by working with this technology within the confines of the last great era of recording studios. His track record in this era included artists such as Yes, Soft Cell, Cat Stevens, Thin Lizzy, New Order, Buzzcocks, Psychedelic Furs, 10cc, John Cooper Clarke, Frank Zappa, Kate Bush, The Who, Queen, Peter Gabriel, Elton John, Squeeze, Tina Turner, Sam Fox, Talk Talk, and Def Leppard. He also worked with producers Trevor Horn, Tony Visconti, Jeff Wayne, Martin Hannett, Robert John 'Mutt' Lange, Frank Zappa and Gus Dudgeon,Using diaries written at the time, he lifts the curtain on the private world of the closed session, with daily accounts of all the projects he worked on, how they were made, who made them, and most importantly, how they became hits. It tells of the highs and lows, the expectations and disappointments of recording many of the top acts of the day whilst navigating the various technical challenges along the way.

Damn good coffee, cherry pie, and the “big bang of auteur television” ― why Twin Peaks deserves to be a pop culture classic In 1990, avant garde filmmaker David Lynch (Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, Dune, Blue Velvet) and acclaimed television writer Mark Frost (Hill Street Blues) teamed up to create a television show that would redefine what the medium could achieve in a one-hour drama. With Twin Peaks, the duo entranced audiences with the seemingly idyllic town, its quirky characters, and a central mystery ― who killed Laura Palmer? In a town like Twin Peaks, nothing is as it seems, and in Wrapped in Plastic, pop culture writer Andy Burns uncovers and explores the groundbreaking stylistic and storytelling methods that have made the series one of the most influential and enduring shows of the past 25 years.

In Janelle Monáe’s full-length debut, the science fiction concept album The ArchAndroid, the android Cindi Mayweather is on the run from the authorities for the crime of loving a human. Living in 28th century Metropolis, Cindi fights for survival, soon realizing that she is in fact the prophesied ArchAndroid, a robot messiah meant to liberate the masses and lead them toward a wonderland where all can be free.Taking into account the literary merit of Monáe’s astounding multimedia body of work, the political relevance of the science fictional themes and aesthetics she explores, and her role as an Atlanta-based pop cultural juggernaut, this book explores the lavish world building of Cindi’s story, and the many literary, cinematic, and musical influences brought together to create it. Throughout, a history of Monáe’s move to Atlanta, her signing with Bad Boy Records, and the trials of developing a full-length concept album in an industry devoted to the production of marketable singles can be found, charting the artist’s own rise to power. The stories of Monáe and of Cindi are inextricably entwined, each making the other more compelling, fantastical, and deeply felt.
