Synopsis

On a warm night in December 1977, David Holden, chief foreign correspondent for the Sunday Times, landed in Cairo to report on crucial peace talks between Egypt and Israel, an epochal moment in global politics. Shortly after dawn, his body was found dumped on a dusty roadside. He had been shot with a single bullet through the heart.
Who killed Holden and why? These were the questions pursued for a year by the newspaper's Insight team, overseen by legendary editor Harold Evans. Before he died in 2020, Evans said that their failure to solve the case was the biggest regret of his long career.
Now, a member of the original Insight team has joined forces with a young investigative journalist from today's Sunday Times to resume the quest. Their search leads them into a world of intrigue and betrayal, exposing the fatal crossovers between journalism and spying.
Meticulously researched and grippingly told, Murder in Cairo reveals the truth of one of the most enigmatic cold case mysteries of the past fifty years.

In their search for truth and happiness, the classical philosophers overlooked one of the most important facets of our lives—sexuality. The author rectifies this error by questioning this field of knowledge and practice: What is "good" coitus? What is a "nice" ass? What is a "legal" sexual act? What is universally "true" in sexuality? Who is "perverse?" Does sex represent a momentary pleasure, or could it embody a foundation for happiness? Using concrete examples, Sylvain Bosselet deconstructs the preconceptions that hinder our freedom and hinder sexual happiness. He seeks to lay the foundations for a philosophy of sex.

The sensational true story of how a bank robber killed a man in a wild shootout, sparking a national debate around gun control and the death penalty.

On July 24, 1964, twenty-four-year-old Matthew Kerry Smith disguised himself with a mask and a Beatle wig, hoisted a semi-automatic rifle, then held up a bank in North York, Ontario.

The intelligent but troubled son of a businessman and mentally ill mother, Smith was a navy veteran with a young Indigenous wife and a hazy plan for violent revolution.

Outside the bank, Smith was confronted by Jack Blanc, a former member of the Canadian and Israeli armies, who brandished a revolver. During a wild shootout, Blanc was killed, and Smith escaped—only to become the object of the largest manhunt in the history of the Metropolitan Toronto Police Force.

Dubbed "The Beatle Bandit," Smith was eventually captured, tried, and sentenced to hang. His murderous rampage had tragic consequences for multiple families and fueled a national debate about the death penalty, gun control, and the insanity defense.

What was Elvis like in those early Army Days? The question I get most is 'what was he like?' It's hard to give a blanket answer because I knew the 22-year-old version of what everyone else sees in the media and those tell all books. We were kids, clowning around having fun, playing football, chasing girls. I didn't know him in his turbulent years or have exposure to any prescription pill use or so-called mood swings. I only knew the young, very funny, unvarnished version of him. Hopefully the stories in this book shed more light on what he was really like. A number of years ago, The National Enquirer wanted to pay me for an interview and was looking for dirt. Not a chance. I enjoyed being Elvis' friend in those early days of his career. For decades, many people have asked me to write this book...so now in my 80s here it is. I had fun telling these stories and you will laugh or even find it touching, but simply enjoy the real Elvis in the Army. I have also included for you some stories by his singing buddy, Wes Daniels, as well as some romantic stuff shared by his early girlfriend and first secretary, Elisabeth Mansfield. - Johnny Lang

20-something and uncertain about her future, Florentyna Leow is exhilarated when an old acquaintance offers her an opportunity for work and cohabitation in a little house in the hills of Kyoto.
Florentyna begins a new job as a tour guide, taking tourists on elaborate and expensive trips around Kyoto's cultural hotspots. Amidst the busy tourist traps and overrun temples, Florentyna develops her own personal map of the city: a favourite smoky jazz kissa; a top-shelf katsuobushi loving cat; an elderly lady named Yamaguchi-san, who shares her sweets and gives Florentyna a Japanese name.
Meanwhile, her relationship with her new companion develops an intensity as they live and work together. Their little kitchen, the epicenter of their shared life, overlooks a community garden dominated by a fruitful persimmon tree. Their relationship burns bright, but seasons change, the persimmon tree out back loses its fruit, and things grow strange between the two women.
How Kyoto Breaks Your Heart is a collection about the ways in which heartbreak can fill a place and make it impossible to stay.
