Synopsis

A comic novel of ambition and infidelity in the suburbs by “the funniest serious writer to be found either side of the Atlantic” (Kinglsey Amis).   Harking from the golden age of fiction that skewered the middle-class American dream—the school of John Updike and John Cheever—this novel by the author of Slouching Towards Kalamazoo looks with laughter upon the lawns, cocktails, and creature comforts of suburbia, as well as the antics and anxieties that lurk just beneath its manicured facade. De Vries’s classic situation comedy The Tunnel of Love follows the interactions of a socially insecure, pun-loving family man, an officious lady caseworker from an adoption agency, and a chauvinist pig—all of whom are neighbors who know far too much about one another’s private lives.   In this farcical tale of marital quibbles, De Vries employs his verbal fluidity and singular gift for wordplay to offer readers “his Scarlet Letter, in which adultery leads not to a consciousness of sin and repentance but to a neurotic guilt and the delicious enjoyment it affords” (D.G. Myers, from the introduction).

The Unbearable Bassington was the first novel written by Saki (H. H. Munro). It also contains much of the elegant wit found in his short stories. Comus (The Unbearable) Bassington, is a charming young man about town. His perversity however thwarts all his mother’s efforts to advance his prospects and lands him in hot water. Like many a “black sheep” he ends up being sent off to one of the colonies to fend for himself. This book showcases Saki’s wonderful writing and that ability to be so very funny and terribly sad at the same time. (Summary by Noel Badrian)

When the bombastic Mr. Bickersdyke is initially introduced to Psmith, he is overwhelmingly underwhelmed. He declares that if he ever got Psmith under his thumb at the New Asiatic Bank, which he manages, Bickersdyke would knock the nonsense out of him in no time. And so it naturally follows that when Psmith and his friend Mike Jackson come to join the questionable forces of the bank, there is plenty of nonsense knocked about. ¶ Chock full of colorful characters and whimsical situations, Mike and Psmith take on the city with vigorous vim.

The problem with history is that much of what you learn in school simply isn't true! For instance, King Harold was NOT shot in the eye with an arrow at the Battle of Hastings, Neanderthals were not as dumb as you'd think, Britain had an Indian curry restaurant years before it had fish-and-chip shops and the American 'Wild West' really wasn't that wild. In many ways the history we casually accept as truth is full of mistakes. One in the Eye for Harold is a riotous romp through the centuries with revelations about the untruth of large swathes of history. It shows us how fictions have coloured our views of religion, politics, war and society - and shows us how some of our most solidly held beliefs are entirely false. In One in the Eye for Harold Phil Mason - author of Napoleon's Haemorrhoids - catalogues how myth and error have shaped our view of the past, and how the history our teachers handed down is often far from the mark. It is full of remarkable insights that entertain gloriously as they challenge the conventional view of history.
