Beschreibung

1969: the East End of London. Dark days where rival gangs and the IRA vie for supremacy.

What can the darkness take from you?

Love - perhaps the most precious commodity - can be dangerous. Deadly, even. Love can lead or abandon; it can be all-seeing or blind.

It can also be a reason to tread where good sense does not prevail. For Wendy Richards, psychiatrist at the Royal London Hospital in the East End, never was a truer word said. Danger was nearer than Wendy could ever imagine.

Cherchez la femme - look for the woman. Would that be Maude Larkin or Bess Saint? Would it be Wendy?

Or, would it be the Black Rose?

The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb, one of the 56 short Sherlock Holmes stories written by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is the ninth of the 12 stories collected in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. The story was first published in Strand Magazine in March 1892.
An engineer, Victor Hatherly, attends Dr. Watson's Surgery after his thumb is chopped off, and recounts his tale to Watson and Holmes. Hatherly had been hired for 50 guineas to repair a machine he was told compressed Fuller's earth into bricks.
Hatherly was told to keep the job confidential, and was transported to the job in a carriage with frosted glass, to keep the location secret. He was shown the press, but on closer inspection discovered a "rust of metallic deposit" on the press, and he suspected it was not being used for compressing earth. He confronted his employer, who attacked him, and during his escape his thumb is chopped off. Holmes deduces that the press is being used to produce counterfeit coins, and works out its location. However, when they arrive, the house is on fire, and the criminals have escaped.

A Falling of Angels is the second part of the Sam Holloway Trilogy of military, action/adventure audiobooks by W T Delaney. The story unfolds against the backdrop of the western world's current struggle against Islamic terrorism. It's London in 2019 and the Islamic State has crumbled, and a team of British-born jihadists is on its way home with revenge and mass murder in mind. When a British agent within Daesh reveals a suicide bomb plot, Samantha Holloway, an ex-British Army Intelligence Corps operator, and her team of former Special Forces soldiers, are contracted by the Security Services to help. Sam's team must race to prevent the attack against the gripping backdrop of a secret, complex, and morally dubious CIA plot, to locate and capture the terrorist mastermind. Has Sam's team been told the truth as the clock ticks towards an attack on the heart of government? All three interlinked novels are based against a factual historical backdrop. The team works together again in the final book of the series An Evil Shadow Falls. The author has drawn on his own experiences gathered while working as an intelligence officer in both Iraq and Afghanistan to craft the stories. The narrator served with him. ***** Five stars again for Delaney.***** I listened to this in two sessions.***** Brilliant, Delaney's background nails the authenticity once again.***** This audiobook is as gripping as the first. ***** Delaney is a tour de force! I literally couldn't put this book down. He makes the complex murky world of counterintelligence infinitely entertaining. Loved it!
